WPA Bakery will open Wednesday

Church Hill gets a little sweeter this week with the opening of WPA Bakery on Wednesday.

“We want to be that place where you can pop in on your way to work for a quick coffee, or come and have a slower morning with a friend. We’re kid-friendly for sure,” says co-owner Kendra Feather, “We want to be part of the walkable neighborhood that makes city life what it is.”

The neighborhood bakery will offer all sorts of treats, including pies, cakes, caneles, honey buns, almond-glazed pretzels, and more as single order items, and whole cakes and pies as special order items.

In addition to being the kitchen behind the Hummingbird Cake at Garnett’s, the Peanut Butter Pie at The Roosevelt, and the Mexican Chocolate Pie at Ipanema, WPA Bakery already has a number of other wholesale clients: look for the WPA Bakery cupcakes on the University of Richmond campus, parfaits at the Best Cafe at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and other items available soon through the grocery delivery service Relay Foods.

WPA Bakery is co-owned by baker David Rohrer and restauranteur Kendra Feather (Ipanema Cafe, Garnett’s Cafe, The Roosevelt). Rohrer is also an accomplished local painter, and has a one-man show opening at the Eric Schindler Gallery at the end of November.

Across the intersection from WPA Bakery, work continues to open the highly anticipated Dutch and Company restaurant. Proper Pie on Broad Street and Sub Rosa on 25th are expected to open this month.

The above picture looks yummy! Will there be doughnuts as well as I was told earlier there would be? Thanks.

So, with all of these fantastic bakeries and restaurants in our neighborhood, I propose a Greater Church Hill Bakery Walking Group to help work off the extra calories.

Brett, I caught a portion of a cooking show and they were making cornmeal muffins with pepper jelly centers which looks good. Must be a variation.
