Sign

Dear Richmonders. This is the interpretive sign of downtown buildings tourists attempt to decipher on Church Hill overlooking downtown. I know because I had to decipher it for 2 tourists from Texas when I was sitting on top of the hill the other day. Come on! We spend a bunch of money to get tourists here and they have to look at this crap? We’re better than this.

Seems to me someone promised the Church Hill Association that sign would be replaced nearly two years ago. Is that anyone else’s recollection?

This should have been done except someone raised the issue of the “stairs to nowhere”, as important and historic. The costly repair work needed to scoped and fund the stairs ate up any $ for interpertive signs and landscaping of the Overlook.
I just love our City’s expensive stairs to nowhere … at least is not a bridge!!!

It couldn’t cost but so much to replace the sign but then again, the city does love to waste money on things of lesser importance – even grant funded money. Like the stupid walk along the canal on Dock Street under the train trestle. It rarely get used, especially for the purpose built, and I have NEVER seen the lights on at any time of the night – a total waste of money.

Eric, are you talking about the Capital to Capital trail? If so, I must respectfully disagree. I think that is an awesome amenity. I love riding my bike on it and one can understand that it isn’t possible to fund raise and build an ambitious project like a 60 mile, riverside bicycle/pedestrian recreation trail from Richmond to Jamestown/Williamsburg along the James River over night. It is a phased project. They are shooting for completion sometime around 2015. As a bike rider I love the idea. As a Church Hill property owner I think it is $$. I think the same regarding the “stairs to nowhere”. I often walk that route to work and both the path and stairs are in dire need of repair and are unique, interesting pedestrian entrances to Church Hill. I bet the City would quickly replace that sign if a few folks complained about it. Have you seen the nice new signs on Belle Isle, along the slave trail and along the Cap to Cap trail. Interesting, high quality interpretive signs.

Brad… not sure if what I am talking about is part of a “trail” but may be wrong. I am talking about the steel girder roofed and asphalt walk under the train trestle along Dock Street at tobacco row. But funny, right after I made this post I saw the lights on for the VERY FIRST time and a variety of people using it! I drive that road every night going home so it caught my attention. Suspect more people will use it if it is lighted at night. Someone in the know must be reading these posts?

@eric – definitely a component of the Capital Trail. more of it is waiting on the resolution of Echo Harbour to head further out to W’burg.
