Based on the popularity of the two community gardens already in Church Hill – the Jefferson Avenue Garden (2300 block of Jefferson Avenue), and the Chimborazo Playground Garden (29th and 31st Streets) – we’ve begun planning a third garden somewhere in the north Church Hill area to meet the huge demand for additional gardens. We need people interested in helping to lead and organize this new effort, so please contact us if you are interested!

I passed by this place at Jefferson Hill almost every day and was puzzled as to what it is. First I saw what looked like someone living in the old gas station building. Next, what looked like some sort of holding area for a construction company. Then saw this Tricycle name and figured some sort of bicycle shop was coming. I had no idea it is a community garden. The signage needs to be more clear to avoid confusion (like me) and attract attention to what is happening.
I did not know Richmond had community gardens. When growing up in the Newport News-Hampton area, my parents rented land in old horse farm fields along with others who looked out for each others gardens. Had some theft but not much.
Great idea – just wish it was a larger location.
By the picture it looks like “flowers” as opposed to vegetable.. which is it?
And while I am here, this was a gas station. There were several in Church Hill mingled in the residential area. What happened to all of them?
Just like I have been wondering what happened to all of Richmond’s church spires? The landscape was dotted with very high church steeple spires but I don’t see a single one now. In fact, the New Light Baptist Church on Broad near 20th had its blown down in a hurricane many years ago and the last I heard was raising funds to replace it but that was several years ago. Would make an interesting thread about old versus new Richmond and how the landscape changed.
Eric, Tricycle Gardens has been helping Richmond neighborhoods establish community gardens for several years. Take a look at their web site, http://tricyclegardens.org/, for more information. The old gas station at 21st, Marshall and Jefferson is their new HQ. Their first community garden is right up the street near the intersection of Jefferson and 24th.
Gardening is one of those activities that is great for a person with a green thumb and those who want a fun and exciting hobby to pass the time; but that doesn’t mean you have to toil away alone at it. Gardening is a great way to meet new people and create a fantastic way to spend time and see positive results.
