Hawk

Richard sends in photos and an explanation:

What appears to be an immature northern goshawk perched in a tree in the 2400 block of E. Grace St. Monday evening. This one had a squirrel in his talons. He flew to the tree from the area of St. John’s Church and spent close to an hour slowly enjoying his dinner and seemingly oblivious to the passers-by and spectators.

Goshawks are rather scarce and not usually seen. This is the extreme southern limit of their range.

Let’s hear it for raptors in Church Hill! I love that our neighborhood is such rich bird-watching territory.

i saw this guy sitting on the fence at Chimbo gardens. I snapped a picture on my cell phone. Then he swooped down and ate out of the compost piles. Some kids scared him back up on to the fence. He was giving me the eye the whole time. Kind of scary actually. LOL

Here are the two cell phone pictures of him by Chimbo Gardens. Not the best quality but you get the point.

I am confused. Was the sighting at 24th and E. Grace, Chimbarazo Gardens, or both? The two areas are very far apart from one another. Regardless, very cool sighting!

#7 Michael, not that far away “as the bird flies” though!

Separate sightings!!!

My pictures were taken at Chimbo garden. The others are clearly up in a tree!

Very cool!

Has anyone else seen him/her around lately?

That hawk, or another, was hanging out on Chimborazo Blvd. last week. Saw him fly between my and my neighbor’s houses and into Chimbo Park. A beautiful sight. Speaking of beautiful, I beliee an Eagle flew over me in front of our hosue on E. Broad. Couldn’t believe it, but heard there were some nesting on the river nearby.

Chimbo,

I have to agree on the Eagle. I have a summer home in Colonial Beach and there are many Eagles that next out there. We see them all the time flying in from the river and they are truly spectacular creatures. By the way, if anyone is interested you might want to go to this site. Live vtreaming video of a Eagle nest (and three eaglets) in Norfolk:

While Eagles, Herons, and Hawks are an awesome sight in the sky, Mockingbirds are the most entertaining to watch.

#13, mockingbirds are entertaining to watch, but their charm wears off a little when they start singing loudly at 3:00 AM:)
