Thanks for posting this! After I uploaded this picture on flickr someone pointed out to me that it used to be a Pure Oil filling station – and there is a website that has something on the building’s history. See here:

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find any historic pictures of this structure. Does anyone have further information – or old photographs?

This former station was known as the Triangle Filling Station, named after the triangular lot that it occupied. Although some believe that this building is from 1923 and was the prototype for Pure Oil’s other cottage style stations, the facts disprove this. It has been well documented that the first Pure Oil cottage was built in Indianapolis in 1927. If the build date of this station is 1923, then it was built for another oil company since Pure Oil didn’t market in Virginia until later. This station operated until 1953, possibly as a Pure Oil. In 1955, a small restaurant occupied the building. Around 1968, the addition was made to the front for a BBQ take-out restaurant. The building has been vacant since 2009. If anyone has vintage photos of this station, or concrete evidence of its branding, I’d love to hear from you.
