Segway of Richmond has announced a Church Hill Segway Tour.

  • Church Hill includes the original 32-blocks of Richmond as laid out by Major William Mayo in 1737
  • Many great examples of Greek Revival, Federal and Victorian styles of architecture
  • St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his “give me liberty or give me death” speech
  • Main Street Station, Libby Hill Park, 17th Street Farmer’s Market, Poe Museum, Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and Chimborazo are all included.

Oooohhhh my. I don’t want to offend anybody who likes these things, but I’m very sorry. A Segway Tour of Church Hill? I can understand the bus tours to St. John’s, as well as those that go around Libby Terrace and the Confederate Soldiers Monument. Put just thinking of scores of people zipping around on Segways on some ‘tour’ of our neighborhood makes me feel like getting out my clothesline. Church Hill is wonderful on foot and good exercise folks 🙂

Lady E,
I doubt we would get scores of people doing this…there have been tours downtown for quite some time and to date, I’ve only seen a few of these things around. While the idea is interesting, I also prefer the on foot method as well. Ultimately, though, I don’t think it’s a horrible thing…

I went on the regular Richmond tour and it was a lot of fun. I’m a fairly regular walker and I love to ride my bike, but the Segway is a different kind of experience.

It seems like this kind of thing would attract more/different people: my 13-year-old nephew was excited to go on the RVA tour, but he’d probably not be so keen on a walking tour. My father-in-law probably isn’t someone that would take a bike tour (especially up Church Hill), but he thought that it’d be fun to do the Segway tour with his grandson.

These things are an abomination.

The two wheeled spawn of the devil himself.

If you want to tour the town, ride a dang bike. Walk. But dont cart around like some dork from “Revenge of the Nerds VII, Nerds on Wheels”

I am going to pass on the segway. I am waiting for tours on an “iron-man” jet pack. (Either that or piggy back on a senior citizen- ’cause a rick-shaw would be too demeaning)

I’d be willing to give it a try just because I like to try out new things before I rush to judge them. I suspect that I’ll still prefer my bike, but for those who cannot or do not want to walk or bike, the tour seems like a good way to show off the neighborhood to people who would otherwise not take the opportunity to see it.

Putting the “walk/run/bike/crawl” issue aside, Segways are a hoot! You can do some seriously stupid and fun things with these “nerd-mobiles”. And I’ll bet powering down 23rd towards the bottom on one would definitely get you on “America’s Wildest Videos”. Anyone got a camcorder? LOL!
