Richmond Police are investigating the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy Sunday night around 11:40 PM at 24th and Fairmount Avenue.

Police are not investigating this as a homicide because they say the man who shot the teenager claims it was in self defense. Police say 14-year-old Rodvon Brown was shot while he attempted to rob a 47-year-old man. Police also say they recovered a gun that may have belonged to the dying teen.

But, the teenager’s family says that’s not possible. When asked why Brown was out close to midnight on a Sunday — they said he snuck out of his room to ride his bike and play with his friends.

He was a good child they say, who may have gotten into mischief, but it was never anything serious. And as far as a gun, “I have never seen a gun,” says the teen’s aunt, Laverne Lewis. “I never seen him to be violent in his life “¦ I don’t believe he had one. Can’t no one make me believe this.”

Police say the 47-year-old man who shot the teen waited until authorities arrived on the scene and then told them it was self defense. He was questioned and released on his own recognizance.
