Yesterday, school and city officials formally named the building housing Franklin Military Academy in Minnis’ honor.
The building had been home to Onslow Minnis Middle School until it was merged into Mosby Middle School last year. The academy, which had been housed at ,a href=’http://www.richmond.k12.va.us/schools/armstrong/’ target=”_blank”>Armstrong High School, moved into the building last fall.
Minnis, who died in 1998, was the first black to petition the Richmond School Board to have his son attend a white elementary school back in 1958, beginning decades of civic activism that included his one-man battle to keep kids from dropping out and skipping school.
