Rising property values and the African-American community

The Feb.1 Richmond Voice article
Blacks Being Pushed Out of the City Due to High-Priced Housing takes on the issue of increasing property values in North Side, Barton Heights, and Church Hill, and what effect this might have on the largely African-American population of these areas.

The article gives facts that support that housing in these areas has increased significantly over the past few years and raises the question of ‘where will these residents go?’.

The article ends by quoting a African-American community member as saying, “I don’t blame them for taking these houses. They are sitting in our neighborhoods going to waste. Why not buy them up and fix them? I’d rather have them fixed up than let them fall apart,” she said.
