· Delegate Jennifer McClellan. will be there to speak to our group, answer questions, and provide a legislative update from this past session at the General Assembly. Please arrive sharply at 7 p.m. to ensure a good turnout for Del. McClellan’s comments.

· Lt. Laino/Lt. Riley Will be there to discuss the current crime issues, answer questions and hear your specific concerns. There has been an increased presence on 24th street and we’ve heard new complaints about Jefferson Park activity.

· 2011-2012 UHCA Officer Elections We will hold elections for UHCA’s positions. Remember, you must be a member in good standing to vote (i.e. have paid dues in some capacity). Because our by-laws require a certain number in attendance to hold a vote, please come on out and encourage your friends/neighbors to do the same.

· Councilwoman Newbille and the City Department of Planning and Development Review
They have been invited to attend and hopefully will be able to in light of the recent zoning issues and property issues in our neighborhood. Please bring your concerns so that they may be addressed or passed along to the appropriate persons.

· National Night Out 2011
This year’s event (August 2nd) will showcase the 25th street and nine milecorridor and promises to be the biggest one to date. Help make it happen! Respond to this email with interest please.

“I wanted to invite you and/or make you aware of the upcoming Chief’s Walk in the Union Hill Neighborhood. The walk will be held on Monday 5-9-11 at 5:00pm and should last about 1 and a half hours. The Chief’s Walks are held quarterly in different locations across the City. It is an opportunity for the Command Staff to walk the neighborhood and speak to residents about issues in their neighborhood.”

Please plan to participate in this walk as the City’s chief law enforcement officer listens and responds to our public safety concerns. This is an incredible opportunity for our neighborhood and a sign that RPD is taking seriously our longstanding issues along 24th Street from Jefferson to Venable. The Chief’s walk will begin at the intersection of 24th and O Streets at 5 pm.

Found black and white kitty with purple flea collar in Churchill. Hungry and missing her home. A friend of mine mentioned that a lady was walking looking for her about 3-4 days ago between M st and 24th. We are feeding her but she is lonely and needs her family!

Through @unionhillrva, neighbors anonymously post sightings of alleged drug dealers and buyers. Serious but not without levity — posters refer to the Hamsterdam of “The Wire” and opine on buyers’ fashion choices — the account is an attempt to draw police attention. A growing number of law enforcement agencies are using social media to inform residents and elicit tips, but this appears to be Richmond’s first neighborhood-originated anti-crime campaign on social media.

Triplex and retail space at 2001-2003 Venable Street is for sale for $339,000. Last sold in 2007 for $360,000.

The Union Hill twitter lit up earlier today with frustration at drug activity at 24th and M Streets, and the 900 block of 24th Street.

I hope the time change and nice weather has allowed people to get out in our beautiful neighborhood here recently. Our monthly meeting will be [TONIGHT], March 16 beginning at 7 p.m. in Cedar Street Baptist Church. We have a lot to discuss and some great things on the horizon:

1) Lt. Laino will provide his monthly update on the criminal activity, trends, and law enforcement issues. He has also looked into the permit requirements for Jefferson Park based on the questions posed about Food Not Bombs at our last meeting.

2) Festivals!
a. Church Hill Irish Festival will be March 27-28th and is a wonderful way to showcase our neighborhood. Please encourage your neighbors as well as your friend who don’t reside in Union Hill to come down and see the area. Maybe stop by one of our restaurants or parks before heading to the festivities on 25th and Broad.
b. Informal Run- David Conmy’s group will do a light jog the morning of the Irish Festival to set the tone for the official race next year! Contact David for details.

3) Discussion of the Summer Social Series (or events) and slate of Officers for UHCA ’11/’12. Nominations are welcome! What direction do you want your neighborhood to go? Concerned about the crime or your property value? Want positive development or a certain business to open in your neighborhood?!?! Get off the fence and into a position to help make it happen!

4) Dues for this year are now owed! Please either pay through the PayPal links available, directly to Mark Lemaire, or pledge volunteer hours in-kind. Remember dues must be paid prior to voting privileges.

5) National Night Out Planning Committees: Last meeting we voted to participate in the large NNO event to be held in the 25th Street/Nine Mile Road Corridor. Several neighboring civic associations have joined up and broken down task into the following commitee
i. Activities – Justin Shelton, Chair
ii. Publicity – No chair, only have names for persons who will help
iii. Finance/Fundraising – David Conmy, Chair
iv. Physical Arrangement – Mary Thompson, David Conmy,Chairs
v. Hospitality – Bill & Ruth Andrews, Chairs
vi. Other committees to be decided as needed

You’ll note that some chairs are still needed so please feel free to volunteer. At the meeting, I’ll be looking for volunteers for the open chair positions and committee members. Union Hill has one of the largest networks, so let’s show it with volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer but are unable to attend the meeting Wednesday, please email with your choice of committee and best point of contact.

Any word on what’s happening at Inner City Blues on Jefferson? There’s been a lot of activity of late. The exterior is freshly painted and new glass doors were installed late last week. Neighbors are curious as to what’s going on with this new business.

The city’s Permits and Inspections site doesn’t show any recent permits for 2306 East Leigh Street. Anybody got the skinny?

We picked up 19 bags of trash, 15 bags of can/bottle recycling, and numerous large items including 2 tires, a weed whacker, and a chair! Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

Come out to support our second Adopt A Block clean up in Union Hill. We will be picking up trash and recycling from 2-4 PM on Saturday March 5th. Snacks will be provided, but please bring your own drink (preferably in a reusable bottle). We will be meeting in front of the community house at the intersection of North 20th St. and O St.

· Lt. Laino will speak on crime statistics, update on their projects, and field your questions.

· David Conmy will speak about the development of 5k race through the neighborhoods of Union Hill and Church Hill. Find out details and how you can get involved.

· Ron Hunt, of Genesis Properties, will speak about his new plans to renovate the existing Cedar Street Apartments. This is a change from the previously planned project to build new construction at the current site.

· Mark Lemaire will give a reminder that annual dues are now due, but we do accept volunteer hours in lieu of monetary dues.

The man was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of a facial laceration after the robbery try, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. [...] The victim said 3-4 males confronted him and ordered him to give them his money, and when the victim told them he didn’t have any, they struck him in the face with an unknown object and ran.

Richmond Police say the first incident happened in the 1900 block of Redd Street around 6:00 p.m. Friday. [...]

Then, about nine and a half hours later, police say they responded to the 900 block of North 21st Street, and found another person shot twice in the upper body. That victim was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

I was forwarded this photo of this house at M and 22nd Streets, under renovation by RBVA. After 801 North 24th was renovated, this became my favorite vacant house in the area and it’s awesome to see it getting some love. Not so awesome to see it to continue to collect graffiti while it’s getting fixed up.

The 3rd Annual Brunswick Stew Feast in Union Hill will be happening on Sunday, January 16th JANUARY 30 at 1PM. All are invited to the green space at the intersection of 23rd and Jessamine Streets. Bring a side dish if you’d like and well wishes for a Happy New Year to share for sure.

It’s that time of year again for the Annual Union Hill Civic Association Progressive Dessert, Friday December 17, 2010 beginning at 6:00 p.m. until 9:45 p.m. This year we hope to avoid the heavy snowfall we ran into last year and enjoy an evening of snacks, friends, and holiday spirit in a trip through the neighborhood we call home.

A reader writes in looking for clarification on parking rules:

I got a $40 parking ticket at around 5:30 AM for parking at this space at 21st/ Leigh/ Princess Anne. I was in front of the purple jeep and behind the telephone pole handicapped ramp. I drive a VW Bug, so a small car. I have no idea what parking rule I broke. The ticket indicates being in a crosswalk or within 20 feet of a crosswalk or alley/ street intersection. If it’s against the law to park within 20 feet of all intersections, that’s news to me & severely cuts down on available parking all over the city. I’m wondering if anyone else around Church Hill/ Union Hill has gotten a ticket like this.

We are adopting the 1800 block of O St. (through Richmond City Adopt-a-Block), so help us beautify it and the surrounding neighborhood by coming out and offering your hands for a couple of hours. You can earn volunteer hours for class and for the goodness of your heart!

Please meet at 1:50pm in front of the 22nd St. parking area across from the Temple of Judah (big red brick building). Wear good walking shoes that you don’t mind getting rough in & bring your own durable gloves if you have any. Snacks will be provided, but try to bring your own water bottle. AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (SHOOTING) 8/31/10 12:55 p.m. – 700 block of Mosby Street – A male reported he was shot by a known male. His injuries are not life-threatening.

THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE 8/30/10–8/31/10 5:00 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – 2100 block of Fairmount Avenue – An unknown person(s) entered the unlocked vehicle and stole two child booster seats.
