New Visions sets special meeting for September

There will be a special meeting of the New Visions Civic League from 10AM-noon on Saturday, September 4 at the East End Library to gather feedback on the draft plan from the East End Transformation Charrette:

This meeting will deal specifically with the drawings that show proposed changes for the area. Civic league members and residents are asked to give their feedback on the plans which will be submitted to Councilperson Cynthia Newbille or Juanita Buster from the City of Richmond Community and Development department. Compiled information from all parties will then be submitted the last of September to the consultants for the final plan.

So fresh and so clean!

The great clean-up was a smashing success today. Props to the Richmond Clean City Commission for the supplies and the Department of Public Works for taking care of our pile. Special thanks to Officer Ford from the First Precinct for helping to organize our crucial drop spot, and to everyone from Unity, New Visions, Union Hill, and Church Hill Central that came out to do the dirty work.

The New Visions Civic Association will be holding a fund-raising yard sale this Saturday at the corner of Fairmount, Nine Mile, and 25th Street. Clothing, shoes, household goods, at least 2 working televisions, furniture, and much much more.

Lt.Martin Harrison’s May report (PDF) for all points north of Carrington and Nine Mile is now available. With photos from New Vision Friends and Family Day at Bryan Park and the Unity Civic Open House and also chock full of dramatic search & arrest narrative:

Firearm Seizure: 05/12/2009, 0026hrs. 900 block of Tulip St. Officer Reynaldo Perez stopped a vehicle driven by a, b/m age 23, for a loud music violation. After being given consent to search the vehicle, Officer Perez found a loaded 12 guage Winchester shotgun (serial #L2131983) in the trunk. Since the driver was a convicted felon, the weapon was seized and he was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon along with other miscellaneous traffic and code violations.

Come on out and help New Visions Civic League clean up the neighborhood! Meet at the little park at 23rd, Q, and Carrington Streets on Saturday, April 18, at 8AM. Trash picker-uppers and bags have been provided by the Clean City Commission, now we need volunteers to put’em to good use!

Fairmount Community Meeting

About 25 people turned out Saturday morning for a community meeting sponsored by the New Vision Civic League for the south end of Fairmount. The meeting included: a discussion of the community desires for development at Nine Mile and 25th, led by Lynn Mcateer of Better Housing Coalition; Cpt.Ronca, Lt.King, and Lt.Harrison of the First Precinct fielded community concerns about drug sales and prostitution; and plans were made to move on tree planting and a neighborhood clean-up.

Thompsons celebrate their 50th

Mr. and Mrs. George W. Thompson Jr. of 22nd Street celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows last Saturday at the Thirty-first Street Baptist Church. The former Mary White, retired from the Richmond Public Schools system, is President of the New Visions Civic League in Fairmount. Mr. Thompson is a retired designer/pattern maker of custom-made shirts and a former church school superintendent. [via]

Thanks to everyone that turned out for New Vision Civic League’s Fairmount Clean-up this morning! We got a lot more accomplished than I though was possible, including getting rid of over 70 tires, 4 mattresses, and a handful of random appliances.
