shooting near M & 31st Streets

Daniel has the bird’s-eye take on the aftermath of a shooting last night near M & 31st Streets:

It seems that the shooting took place about a block from our house and then the guy rode his bike over to our block and collapsed. The police showed up and quickly got him away in an ambulance. They then proceeded to block off a HUGE area and do a lot of talking. We got to talk to some neighbors, police officers and reporters.

5-year-old shot in head @ 24th and M Streets

A 5-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the head by a 10-year-old boy inside a home at 24th and M Streets just after 11PM last night. Judy Wright, the boy’s mother and the owner of the gun, was at work when the shooting took place and has been charged with felony child neglect. The 10-year-old and a 2-year-old also in the house were scooped up by social services. [via]

next Renovator’s Open House set for M Street

The 19th-century Italianate house at 2311 M Street, slated for demolition in 2005, was saved when ACORN found in David Collett a buyer for the house up for the massive task of total renovation and rehabilitation. ACORN’s next Renovator’s Open House will be at this now wonderfully renovated house on May 21st from 5:30 to 7PM.

The Virginia Film Office has a location library of shots from around the neighborhood from what appears to be the early 1990s. The set labeled Church Hill Residential (Rough) caught a bunch of building that have since been fixed up or demolished.

police chase and capture

A combined Virginia State and Richmond City Police chase ended in the rear of 606 North 27th Street early Saturday morning. Police cars cordoned off the block bordered by 26th, 27th, Leigh, and M Streets for approximately 30 minutes as police dogs searched the area. Check out Stretch Ledford’s live-on-the-scene photos

As yet unreported elsewhere, neighborhood sources are reporting a fatal shooting at 32nd and M Streets between 2:30 and 3:00 this afternoon.

massive house fire at 31st and M Streets

John Thomas Hill, Jr. was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a detached garage behind his home at 700 North 31st Street after a fire was reported at the address at around 5am this morning. Police say it appears that Hill shot himself after setting fire to his home.
