One of the great projects from the Better Housing Coalition will be on tv this weekend:

Tune in to The Learning Channel on October 10, 11:00 a.m. to learn about BHC’s procedure for upgrading a home with green technologies while rehabilitating it to historic standards. BHC’s rehab at 1201 N. 28th Street in Church Hill, part of the Beckstoffer’s revitalization intiative, will be the focus of this week’s episode of Restorer Guy, hosted by Gable Painter.

Gable Painter’s new show The Restorer Guy will premier this Tuesday, July 21st @ 7PM on The Learning Channel (TLC):

Gable Painter (yes, that’s his real name) brings new life to old structures in Restorer Guy. A meticulous and obsessive home restoration expert, Gable Painter and his team get their hands dirty restoring historic homes in an effort to bring America back to its former beauty one house at a time.

Fresh off last year’s Flip it Back restoration of 816/818 North 23rd Street, Gable Painter and GP Restoration have lined up a 13-episode season on a cable channel known for home improvement shows. The show will be Richmond-based and will feature 1 main project across the entire season and also a smaller project for each episode. The big project has been lined up, but Gable is looking for some great smaller restoration project. Find out how to get your house in the show…

The show will feature the restoration of a 10,000 square foot brownstone in the VCU area. Each episode will also highlight smaller restoration projects from across the city. It is these smaller projects, “good before and afters”, that Gable is looking for.

The projects should be in a house from 1930 and before (Craftsman, Victorian, Four Square, etc), somewhere in Richmond. Financing should already be in place, and obviously you should be ok with having your house and the project detailed in tv. Gable says that the projects will be billed at is lowest rate. The filming begins in month and will continue through April.

The episode of Flip It Back, the house renovation reality show filmed this year chronicling the rebirth of 816 and 818 North 23rd Street, will premier this weekend. The hour-long episode will air Saturday 11/17 @ 9:00 PM, Sunday 11/18 @ 12:00 midnight, and Saturday 11/24 @ 6:00 PM.

The RTD looks at Gable Painter’s award-winning and TV-bound renovation of 816-818 North 23rd Street in Flipped to the extreme – Union Hill renovation worthy of Learning Channel program was ‘a nightmare’ undertaking. The Learning Channel, which airs the “Flip That House” series, will broadcast a special show called “Flip It Back” detailing the renovation of this house on November 1.

“It was a total disaster — a crack house. People were using piles of old clothes as a bathroom,” said Bill Hartsock, an agent with Francisco, Robinson and Associates Realtors who is selling the homes.

Union Hill house wins ACORN Golden Hammer

The Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (A.C.O.R.N.) paid tribute to the individuals that are “in the trenches” renovating and revitalizing Richmond’s historic neighborhoods at its annual Golden Hammer Awards last night. The winners were announced in the categories of Best Residential Renovation, Best Commercial Renovation and Best Infill Construction, with the award for Best Residential Renovation going to Beverly El & Gable Painter for their work at 816 / 818 North 23rd Street (see before & after photos!).

From the announcement:

This Italianate double house, built in 1883, is the last remaining building on the east side of the 800 block of North 23rd Street. Constructed as working class housing in the Union Hill neighborhood, this desolate double house was in a state of total collapse when Gable Painter saw its potential despite the fact the building was out of plumb by nearly a foot Mr. Painter convinced the owner, Beverly El, to help him bring this modest address back to its original state. Mr. Painter served as the general contractor for the meticulous restoration which included exact duplication of the original porch columns and bracketed cornice, milling the exact dimension of the original exterior clapboards, and hoisting the structure back into an upright position. Mr. Gable’s efforts have rescued this formerly dilapidated house and transformed it into a stunning home for new Union Hill residents. The entire renovation process was documented by a new television series on The Learning Channel focusing on renovation of historic homes, which will air in November.

update on Union Hill A&E house

We’ve heard that A&E will be filming a segment for Flip This House @ 816/818 North 23rd Street Street on Wednesday/Thursday of this coming week, weather permitting. The subject will be the Gable Painter’s renovation of the double house, underway since March. The segment is scheduled to air on Saturday 11/17@8PM.

house flip (back!)

Yesterday’s rumor about a local house being featured on a house flip tv show is essentially correct, but it is better than that…

816 and 818 North 23rd Street

The double house at 816 and 818 North 23rd Street in Union Hill has long been an eyesore. Once a clean and classic set of homes, this property has been vacant or squatted for quite some time. Gable Painter of GP Restoration is going to see that this 97-year-old house gets a new chance, and we’ll hopefully get to watch how all of this goes down.

This house, in all of it’s vinyl & cemented glory, is to be featured in the pilot for a new show called Flip Back That House. The idea is to show a house being more faithfully restored, rather than fixed & flipped. Filming begins this week and should last for the next 4 months or so.

“This is exciting for Church Hill and for Richmond”, says Gable, who lives on 26th Street himself. He sees this as an oportunity to showcase the value of a good restoration and of what RIchmond has to offer. With plans to incorporate visits to Beckstoffer’s and Caravati’s, the home-grown renovation business in Richmond will get some good exposure. Gable stressed that he is interested in a quality renovation, saying that anything else is a “disservice to the community”.

The story of how this came to be is interesting, too. Thinking that the current crop of renovation shows were too “wimpy”, Gable, owner of GP Renovation, called around until he managed to get in contact with a producer that would listen. He pitched the idea of a show that goes beyond the “carpet and hot water heater” updates of the genre, selling’em on a “This Old House on steroids”. The network had apparently been kicking around a similar idea; timing is everything…

The room for sitting on a couch and pissing into bottles (it gets worse).

Built in 1910 and adjacent to a block of Venable Street that was recently vacant and collapsing but which has seen great deal of quality renovation, Gable expects that each side of this house will sell for over $200,000. With the small yards, he sees attracting buyers that might otherwise be considering a condo.
