Today we are 5!

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the first post on CHPN. Since then we’ve had 2,328 posts, just over 20,000 comments, and ever-increasing community participation. An ongoing big thanks to all of you that send in stories, share in the comments, or just hang back and take it all in.

CHPN on Facebook and twitter

Just a reminder that you can get neighborhood news and follow us Facebook and on twitter. We’ve also got a new twitter feed set up just for the photos added to the Church Hill flickr pool at @CHPNphotos. It’ll be all photos, both news&niceties.

Let’s try something new!

After almost 5 years, the site has been moved over to a new host. It may be some hours before everything is really back to normal around here: you might have some broken links or images that do not display, etc. Do please let me know if anything is completely broken. NOTE: If the address [...]

Get involved at the Assignment Desk

An idea first put forth in November, I’ve revamped the Assignment Desk and would really love to have folks: 1) Suggest stories that are being missed, 2) Be the journalist and help cover the really local news.

Check out the new CHPN forum…

As something of an experiment, there is now a CHPN forum. I imagine this as a less structured environment where the conversation can range a bit more widely. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Print-edition for May

The May 2009 print edition of CHPN is now available. (previously)

This is not a newspaper.

In something of an experiment, I’ll be out&about over the next 2 or 3 days putting out flyers. They’re kind of neat, a tiny print-version of the site.

Local website “not that funny”

Local “news site” Church Hill People’s News, in a lame attempt at seasonal humor, posted several half-assed April Fools stories early this morning. “I’ve been spending too much time with middle school kids”, site author Murden said when called on his juvenile prank. [via]

2 discussions vie for RVA Blog Award 2008

Hey folks! Two of our posts have been nominated in the RVA News Richmond Blog Awards 2008 for Best Comment Thread: March’s Style profiles Pinkney-Eppes and September’s King’s Maidens? 3700 East Broad? WTF?. Check out the other nominees and take a moment to vote for yourself (essentially).

seeking similar fools from other neighborhoods…

Based on how well Church Hill People’s News had been received by the community, over the past 18 months I helped start other such sites across Richmond. Some of these I’ve been publishing while hoping that they’d be picked up by people that, like, actually live in the areas covered by the sites (but this [...]

an easier way to get involved

I’ve posted a list of Open Assignments, upcoming events and what not that it would be great to have words/photos from or about for the site. If you would like to help make this site that much better, you can volunteer to pick up one of the events that should be covered.

Under 40

Like last year, the East End is well represented on the Style Weekly Top 40 Under 40. Congrats to poets Allison Titus and Joshua Poteat, community activist James “J.J.” Minor III, and Fulton’s Annette Cousins.

Church Hill Little People’s News

Tobacco Avenue has the word on Church Hill Little People’s News, Richmond’s newest community blog: For instance, while Church Hill People’s News ran a recent story about the upcoming Italian Festival and its entertainment and food options, the article made no mention of little people-specific entertainment or food at the event, Sutton notes. “Will the [...]
