Props for Chimbo’s push for IB

Style Weekly looks at the push for IB at Chimbo: Parents in the neighborhood around Chimborazo have been working with the school for more than a year to drum up support for an international baccalaureate program. More than 200 people have signed petitions and the school’s faculty and staff have voted in support.

School Board unanimously supports Chimborazo IB initiative

Last night the RPS School Board voted unanimously to support Chimborazo Elementary School’s International Baccalaureate initiative. This allows Chimborazo to begin a feasibility study and puts the school on track to become a fully authorized IB World school by 2015, and begin IB implementation next school year.

Parents and Community members in support of the Chimborazo International Baccalaureate initiative (PDF) to meet at School Board public hearing at 7pm. We hope to have a crowd of over 100 people to show that School Board there is broad support for this excellent program.

Project Kids Chef teaches students nutrition

Fifth-grade students at Richmond’s Chimborazo Elementary School have discovered that healthy food can also taste good thanks to “Project Kids Chef,” a nutrition and cooking demonstration program that features partnerships with local restaurants and the Farm to Family “mobile veggie bus.”

A grassroots effort is underway to bring International Baccalaureate (“IB”) Primary Years Program to Chimborazo Elementary School. An info meeting will be held on March 31 at 6:30PM at Chimborazo, and there will be presentation to the School Board at City Hall on April 4th at 7PM.

All neighborhood schools meet SOL marks

The Virginia Department of Education today released the 2010-2011 accreditation numbers based on last year’s Standards of Learning (SOL) scores. For the 3rd year in a row, all of the neighborhood schools are fully accredited (2009, 2008). Statewide 98% of schools are accredited, and all Richmond Public schools are accredited.

Franklin Military Academy junior will launch Teen Trendsetters mentoring program

Toneisha Brown, a junior at Franklin Military Academy, has been chosen to launch the Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentor program at the city’s public military high school. Brown is one of 30 students from across the southern United States selected for this school year to head up the reading programs in their communities.

Murder on 31st Street

The RTD is reporting that a man was found shot dead on the Chimborazo Elementary School playground at about 7:45PM tonight. Unconfirmed reports from neighbors say that a suspect is in custody.

Teen Sexuality and Self-Esteem Awareness Forum
