Beckstoffer’s still on track
The RTD’s New life in Church Hill takes a look at the Better Hosuing Coalition’s plans for old Beckstoffers:
Now, the building is slated to start a new life as a collection of loft-style apartments. It is part of a development plan that will affect most of the block of North 28th Street between R and S streets. [...] Initial plans for the development include 18 to 21 loft-style apartments, 16 town homes, three rehabilitated residential dwellings and a 32-unit senior facility. Some of the properties will be for sale; others will be available to rent. It also might include a small commercial space.

BHC to celebrate 100th home start in Church Hill
Better Housing Coalition will commemorate the start of its 100th home in Church Hill with a reception at 1105 North 26th Street on Oct.22 at 11AM (related…). All are welcome to come be a part of this celebration. Also, spaces are still available for BHC’s last bus tour of the season: an afternoon drive through a few of their communities and a discussion of the affordable housing issue in Richmond from noon-2PM on Oct.14. almost 90 houses by Better Housing Coalition
Over the past 12 years, Better Housing Coalition has built or renovated close to 90 houses in the area. While the great majority of the activity has been in the
Church Hill Central area of the city’s Neighborhoods in Bloom program, they are also looking at a large-scale redevelopment at the former Beckstoffers on 28th Street for the near future.

2 houses for Pink Street
The foundations have been dug for a new Better Housing Coalition double house on Pink Street. Only one block long, bound by Venable and Carrington Streets, Pink Street has long been a vacant and raggedy corridor.

Beckstoffers at Church Hill?
7th District Council Representative Delores McQuinn and T.K.Somanath of the Better Housing Coalition hosted a community meeting about a proposed development at the former Beckstoffer’s on 28th Street. Featuring a bold design by Urban Design Associates, BHC would like to build a mix of both attached single-family homes and condo/apartment units on the land.

Fairmount Community Meeting
About 25 people turned out Saturday morning for a community meeting sponsored by the New Vision Civic League for the south end of Fairmount. The meeting included: a discussion of the community desires for development at Nine Mile and 25th, led by Lynn Mcateer of Better Housing Coalition; Cpt.Ronca, Lt.King, and Lt.Harrison of the First Precinct fielded community concerns about drug sales and prostitution; and plans were made to move on tree planting and a neighborhood clean-up.

The RTD’s Housing 101 a helpful class looks at the free first-time homebuyers class offered monthly at the East End library. Freda Green-Bolling, the VHDA-certified trainer who leads the sessions, herself bought a house in Fairmount through the Neighborhoods in Bloom program program and Better Housing Coalition.

The dedication of the new little park at 23rd, Short Q, and Carrington Streets tomorrow will also serve as an opportunity for Better Housing Coalition to display some of their work with tours of new and renovated houses in the Fairmount, Union Hill, and Church Hill North neighborhoods. Mayor Wilder, Councilperson McQuinn, BHC Executive Director TK Somanath (and others) will speak, and a lunch will be provided.
