small excitement on 23rd Street

In the words of the less-than-loquacious officer on the scene, the police were “investigating a situation” when 2 guys drove away and were pulled on the 1100 block of 23rd Street. It looked like they found little tiny bag of weed in the car. One guy was taken away in the van, after screaming for bystanders to “call my girl” and “tell her that I love her”. A second man was cuffed for a while and then released; he waited until the cops were gone to retrieve whatever he’d stashed under the parked car.

a shed break-in; a question about a robbery

There was a shed break-in last night in on the 600 block of 29th Street sometime between 11PM and 4AM. The entire lock was removed and various lawn equipment was stolen. /// A reader wants to know if anyone has any info on the armed robbery on the 400 block of 23rd Street on March 23rd.

hookers and drugs on North 22nd; robberies north of Fairmount (UPDATED)

Fairmount’s ongoing problems with prostitution and drugs makes the news. So everybody knows that this is going on, now what? More signs? … Another later story also on nbc12 brings to light a spate of robberies last night in Brauers at Brauers Lane and Rogers Street and nearby on North 23rd Street. UPDATE: Arrests made in Fairmount robberies.

local man linked to Chesterfield murder is found dead

A man allegedly linked to the Dec.13 killing of Anna Callear-Kirby in Chesterfield was found overdosed in a rooming house at 23rd and T Streets at about 4PM yesterday. Police report that the man may also have been responsible for a recent armed robbery and assault at a bank, and was suspected in the robbery of a CVS Pharmacy at 23rd and Main Streets last week. The episode of Flip It Back, the house renovation reality show filmed this year chronicling the rebirth of 816 and 818 North 23rd Street, will premier this weekend. The hour-long episode will air Saturday 11/17 @ 9:00 PM, Sunday 11/18 @ 12:00 midnight, and Saturday 11/24 @ 6:00 PM.

The RTD looks at Gable Painter’s award-winning and TV-bound renovation of 816-818 North 23rd Street in Flipped to the extreme - Union Hill renovation worthy of Learning Channel program was ‘a nightmare’ undertaking. The Learning Channel, which airs the “Flip That House” series, will broadcast a special show called “Flip It Back” detailing the renovation of this house on November 1.

Union Hill house wins ACORN Golden Hammer

The Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (A.C.O.R.N.) paid tribute to the individuals that are “in the trenches” renovating and revitalizing Richmond’s historic neighborhoods at its annual Golden Hammer Awards last night. The winners were announced in the categories of Best Residential Renovation, Best Commercial Renovation and Best Infill Construction, with the award for Best Residential Renovation going to Beverly El & Gable Painter for their work at 816 / 818 North 23rd Street (see before & after photos!).

organized action in Union Hill

Lora Toothman reports that at the last Union Hill Civic Association meeting, the group decided to target specific areas of the neighborhood for attention from the city, and to coordinate requests for maintenance for those areas so that many people request the same action items at once. The hope is that the city notes the influx of requests for the area and fixes those problems. The first area chosen is immediately around the triangle at the intersection of 23rd, Jessamine and Cedar Streets.

The dedication of the new little park at 23rd, Short Q, and Carrington Streets tomorrow will also serve as an opportunity for Better Housing Coalition to display some of their work with tours of new and renovated houses in the Fairmount, Union Hill, and Church Hill North neighborhoods.
