Smashed windows and dented cars littered a Church Hill neighborhood Monday, after a late-night rampage early Sunday morning involving 30 or more teenagers and young adults, according to neighbors. A robbery attempt near Coalter and Accommodation Streets yesterday:

Police say two men approached another man and demanded money. One of the suspects had a gun. The group began to fight and after a crowd gathered, the suspects fled.

A man was shot and wounded by Richmond police after a brief pursuit by officers responding to a report of an armed person near the 700 block of Mosby Street, a police spokeswoman said tonight.

U.S.News has awarded Franklin Military Academy a Bronze medal in their national ranking of high schools.

Richmond Public Schools can claim the #2 and #3 high schools in the region: Community High School was awarded a Gold Medal (17th best high school in the state and #343 nationally), while Open High was awarded a Silver Medal (#20 in Virginia and #518 in the country). The highest ranking Chesterfield County high school is Midlothian High School at #21 Virginia / #530 nation; Deep Run high school in Henrico comes in at #14 in Virginia / #284 nationally.

Armstrong High School was not recognized.

Officers were called about 12:15 a.m. and found a man in his early 20s who had been shot in the leg and arm, said Capt. Paul Kiniry. The wounds were not considered life-threatening.

Richmond Police detectives today announced multiple indictments and arrests that will clear nearly all of the April homicides and shootings in the city, including a shooting/robbery on 22nd Street. Additionally, detectives have either identified or obtained warrants for persons wanted in several other incidents.

With the assistance of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshal Service, Henrico Police Department and the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority Police Department, Richmond Police officers and detectives were able to arrest three individuals (above, left to right) who were indicted this week on 53 charges for three separate incidents.

Stephen Emanuel Mangrum, 25, of Hopewell, was indicted for:

1. April 6 shooting and robbery of a man in the 1800 block of North 22nd Street. Charges: abduction with intent to gain pecuniary benefit; use of a firearm during an abduction; use of a firearm during a malicious wounding; attempted murder; use of a firearm during an attempted murder; conspiracy to commit robbery
2. April 9 homicide of Khalfaanii Hasaan Sultaan in the 1700 block of Chicago Avenue. Charges: murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a murder; robbery, use of a firearm during a robbery; and possession of firearm by a violent felon
3. April 16 shooting and robbery of a man and woman in the 700 block of Porter Street. Charges: aggravated malicious wounding; use of a firearm during an aggravated malicious wounding, attempted murder; use of a firearm during an attempted murder; burglary with a deadly weapon; use of a firearm during a burglary; robbery; use of a firearm during a robbery; abduction with intent to gain pecuniary benefit; use of a firearm during an abduction; and possession of a firearm by a violent felon.

Corey James Walters, 18, of the 1100 block of St. Paul Street, was indicted for:

1. April 6 shooting and robbery of a man in the 1800 block of North 22nd Street. Charges: abduction with intent to gain pecuniary benefit; use of a firearm during an abduction; use of a firearm during a malicious wounding; attempted murder; use of a firearm during an attempted murder; conspiracy to commit robbery

2. April 9 homicide of Khalfaanii Hasaan Sultaan in the 1700 block of Chicago Avenue. Charges: murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a murder; robbery; and use of a firearm during a robbery.

Because all of these cases and others are still ongoing, detectives are still asking for the public’s help and tips can be called in anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

For a mix of reasons, the site faded… It was a neat way to see what’s going on around the city, it’s very cool to see Daniel working to bring it back. Style Weekly is reporting that the controversial Echo Harbor condo development at the foot of Libby Hill has been nixed:

Developer George Ross says he’s spending the next two to three months studying the riverfront site along Dock Street, which is a crucial link between Shockoe Bottom and Rocketts Landing.

Three years ago the plans included about 100 condominiums in towers as high as 12 stories, studding the riverbank just below Church Hill’s Libby Hill Park. But Ross is going back to the drawing board. “We have no plans to build residential at this point,” he says, although he offers no further details.

Chimborazo Elementary School night at the Diamond with the Richmond Flying Squirrels is this Saturday May 12th at 6:35PM. If Chimborazo ES sells 200 tickets, they will be able to have a table on the main concourse to spread the word about the International Baccalaureate program at the school,

Join Quoit Club as we explore Richmond’s origins in a tour of the city’s oldest neighborhood, Church Hill. We will visit some of the neighborhood’s most notable spots and hear the history of this area. Church Hill, Mississippi, is a small unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Mississippi. It is located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, approximately 18 miles north of Natchez.

At the center intersection of this small community is Wagner’s Grocery, built around 1837. Just across the intersection is Christ Church, completed in 1858. Closed in the late 1990s, the store was donated to the Church Hill historic society for preservation.

The genesis of the Church Hill community was a group of people known as the “Old Maryland Settlement” that moved to the Jefferson County area from Maryland after the Revolutionary War. For many years the town was simply known as the “Maryland Settlement” until the name was eventually changed to Church Hill around 1820.

The first church of the community, known as Christ Church, was constructed of logs in 1820. The current church was part of one of the oldest Episcopal groups, dating from the 1790′s, and its design was copied from the old country churches in England.

Church Hill is also known for having the largest fresh butterbean and pea shelling operation in the United States.

Libby Hill Overlook tops Preservation Virginia’a list of 2012 Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia:

On this spot in 1737, William Byrd II declared that the beautiful view reminded him of Richmond on the Thames in England and named our city Richmond. The sister site in England is a celebrated and protected viewshed.

Threat:
The viewshed could be lost if proposed high-rise condo units are built along the river which would block this prospect.

Recommendation:
Historic Richmond Foundation and Scenic Virginia are working towards positive resolutions. We encourage the use of this designation to support a broad coalition of stakeholders to work with the developer and the City of Richmond to find a resolution that preserves this iconic view while achieving economic goals. ArchitectureRichmond takes a look at the “unexpected urban garden” that is St.John’s Mews:

The result of this effort is an unexpected urban garden that feels more curated than manicured. The various period features of the Mews, coupled with the views of the surrounding gardens and historic buildings, amount to a veritable outdoor museum of traditional English garden design. The view eastward through the alley frames the St. John’s churchyard, giving the Mews its name.

Blue Sky Fund invites you to the seventh annual Church Hill Games! CHG is a sports clinic for kids from K to 8th grades that will include 10 different sports stations. After the clinic, we hear a Christian inspirational message and the kids enjoy lunch together with the volunteers. We are expecting 125 kids, so we need lots of volunteers! Volunteers must be at least in 9th grade, and children of volunteers in grades K-8th are welcome to participate equally with our other kids, but may not volunteer. History Replays Today has a fascinating look at the history of the first Jewish Cemetery in Richmond (believed to be one of the first Jewish cemeteries in America):

On Oct 21, 1791 Isaiah Isaacs, the first Jew recorded to have settled in Richmond, deeded a 40′x102′ section of land just west of the SW corner of 21st and E Franklin St “to be used for the sole purpose of a burying ground for all Jews male and female that may at any time here after die in the city of Richmond, or whose bodies after death might be brought there to be interred”. [...] In time the congregation of Beth Shalome decreased in numbers and the original trustees died, leaving the Franklin St Cemetery to fall into “a state of abject neglect”. [...]

Two Richmond City high school seniors have been named 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars, the nation’s largest minority scholarship program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The two Richmond City students selected are Shaquille Christmas from Franklin Military Academy and Kia Watson from Richmond Community High School. Both are their respective schools’ 2012 valedictorians.

Christmas, who ranks first in his class with a 4.0 grade point average, will study biochemistry at the University of Richmond.

Watson, who has compiled a 4.81 grade point average, plans to attend Stanford University and major in biomedical engineering.

The Gates Millennium Scholars program includes renewable college scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate studies. This year, 1,000 students representing 47 states, the District of Columbia, the Marshall Islands and four U.S. territories: Federated States of Micronesia, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, were selected.

Package from Sherrill Tree Company was delivered to 609 N 31st Street in Churchill on April 2nd @ 10:30 am. UPS has confirmed the delivery and left the package on the front porch. It was unknown to me that the package had arrived at its destination until the end of last week. Package contains a brand new tree climbing rope that is necessary for me to perform my job. In the year I have lived at that address, I have had no issues with packages being stolen off the porch. If anyone from the neighborhood has any idea what has happened to it or can return it, I would greatly appreciate it. If the package is returned, with rope unharmed, a monetary reward will be offered.

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to find and identify the man who is wanted in connection with a shooting on Parker Street earlier this month.

At approximately 11:10 p.m. on April 1, officers responded to the 5200 block of Parker Street for a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

He told officers that he gave the man a ride from the Valero gas station at 3050 Williamsburg Road to Parker Street where the man robbed and shot him.

Detectives believe this offender lives in the Williamsburg Road and Futura Avenue areas.

Anyone with any information about who this person is or where he can be found is asked to call Detective Anthony Coates at 646-0729 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.

I’m currently being invaded by birds who have found a way into my attic. It is a two story home and I have no way of reaching the point of entry.

Do you happen to know of anyone who can patch up the area? (The area is where two pieces of wood meet that have come a part). And maybe get the birds out at the same time?

At least four men died as a result of the collapse – the locomotive’s fireman, who staggered out of the tunnel but died a short time later; Mason, the engineer, whose body was removed from the tunnel after a lengthy rescue effort; and two railroad laborers whose bodies were never recovered.

However, there has always been a suspicion that more — perhaps many more — were entombed in the tunnel. Griggs doubts there are more than 100, as some have claimed over the years, but he finds it “certainly plausible” more than two are buried there.

“Because if you were an African-American from Georgia … and you came here for a job, your family never expected to see you again,” he said. “You could have walked in the tunnel and the tunnel collapsed … and nobody would have missed you.”
