There will be a bike swap at 9AM and a day of bicycle racing this Saturday at Chimborazo Park as part of the five-day 2012 North American Cycle Courier Championships.

The NACCC is the premier bike messenger event on the continent:

The hardest working couriers throughout the continent converge to socialize and face off for a chance at the title of Courier Champion. Over the years the championship has been to various major cities with each locale influencing the courses, rules and style of the competition. This year Richmond, Virginia will be showcasing it’s downtown’s inclines and historic cobbled streets for the event. The weekend event will be a grueling logistical challenge of strength, speed, and mental capacity. Open forums, parties, and side events turn the weekend into a true celebration of sport, friendships and culture.

We invite everyone to attend as well as compete. There are several Championship Titles up for grabs. Tons of side events and parties for everyone’s entertainment. All current working messengers and food delivery persons please sign up for the Messenger Category. If you’ve worked in the past (no matter how long) please enter the Ex-Messenger Category. For all commuters, civilians, industry personal and volunteers sign up in our “Open” category. A helmet, bag, and lock are required at all times during competitions. Your event registration signs you up for both qualifiers, all the side events and social gatherings as well as an official T-shirt.

There used to be more.

Once there was a break-in and the owner (I assume) painted a notice on the front about the break-in and requested any witnesses to call him with information. “Be a Hero!” Then a woman painted a mural over the break-in notices and integrated the notices into the mural. The gray-painted plywood over the storefront windows? That’s where the mural was. There was a blue sky with puffy clouds, a black Jesus Christ superhero flying downward (“Saints ain’t all ascendin’”), and small portraits of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and others. Then that was painted over. “Call you-r hero” and a bit of the blue sky in the coffering over the entry are all that remain. Except that recently the “Call you-r” and “Hero” panels have been removed.

1. The sense of community. We’ve got everything from folks who have lived in the same houses for 50 years to new homeowners, hood rats, grandmas, couples, students, artists, musicians, and even a handful of anarchists and Republicans.

2. Nowhere is Richmond more beautiful than from Jefferson Park (unless it’s Libby Hill or Chimborazo).

3. We might not have as many restaurants as other parts of the city, but what we do have is best in class.

4. There is a palpable sense of history — and thus of the possibilities of the future.

5. The East End is raggedy like nowhere else in RVA. New Year’s is like the Old West. Life in most of the East End is not sheltered, and you gotta love it.

At his presentation to the Greater Richmond Chamber this past Thursday at St.John’s Church, Mayor Jones touched on a number of topics, including building seeing a grocery store built at 25th and Nine Mile roads:

The city wants to draw more businesses, especially small retailers and a grocer, to the East End. Peter H. Chapman, the city’s deputy chief administrative officer for economic and community development, said after the mayor’s speech that the city is still working to draw those companies to the East End, especially along North 25th Street and Nine Mile Road.

[...]

Chapman said that visit will occur no later than the fall and that a decision will be made on which grocer to work with at the intersection of 25th Street and Nine Mile by the end of 2012.

The first mention on CHPN of this grocery store was almost exactly 6 years ago. At a 7th District Meeting in 2006 hosted by then-city council person Delores McQuinn, we were given a timetable that would have seen the store open for business years ago:

No specific timeline is currently available, though the project is intended to be underway sooner rather than later – more towards 2 years than 5 or 10. An audiance member pointed out that a similar clearing had happened in Fulton Bottom 40 years ago, and that there was still vacant land.

With the redrawing of the city’s nine districts after the 2010 census comes a redrawing of the voting precincts.

I haven’t found a formal explanation anywhere, but the East End now has 7 precincts where as before there were 6. There are two notable changes: Precinct 708 has been carved out of Precinct 707, and Precinct 702 has absorbed southern Fairmount and a sliver of Union Hill. There is still no Precinct 704.

Here is the new precinct list and voting locations:

Humdinger Craft Soda is a local hand crafted soda company that makes their drinks using filtered water, cane sugar and all natural ingredients. The Church Hill-based company is just now getting their soda to market, look for the ginger ale at the Black Hand Coffee Company in the Museum District and closer to home at The Roosevelt on 25th Street and Shockoe’s Urban Farmhouse.

The ginger ale is ultra natural. No added coloring, flavours, and no preservatives. I literally chop the ginger and steep it to extract the flavour add a little cane sugar with a hint of lime and makes for a perfect bourbon mixer or straight from the bottle. I have done over a hundred different recipes to get it to where it is now so pretty happy with where it is at. Often times ginger ales will claim to be all natural but use natural flavoring such as capsicum to give it the bite, but mine comes straight from the ginger.

The label/logo was designed by a local artist, Jamie Douglas. We wanted to give ginger ale which has generally been a drink for old people a little youth and playfullness. Even the glass bottles are made in Toano, VA.

I’ve been mentored through the process by Arthur Carver who is a third generation ginger ale maker in the northern neck and whose family started Northern Neck Ginger Ale which they sold to coke a couple of years ago. To my knowledge I am the only person in Virginia selling all natural glass bottled ginger ale.

A new civic association is being created through the merger of the Church Hill Central and the Oakwood/Chimborazo associations.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 4th at 7pm in one of the meeting rooms at the EDI building (corner of 25th and M Streets), with plans to meet at the Robinson Theater after that.

A message sent out by Justin Shelton after their initial meeting last week:

First off, I’d like to thank those folks that came out to the meeting last night. We’re definitely making progress.

For those of you that weren’t there, we had a public safety update from the Richmond Police Department, followed by a brief presentation by the Better Housing Coalition on their work at the Beckstoffer’s Mill development. We will be issuing a letter of support to help them in their appearance before the Board of Zoning Appeals early next month. We then started a discussion on what we wanted this group to start working on in our neighborhood. From this conversation, we formed five categories – Education, Public Safety, Communication/Outreach/Social, Beautification, Economic Development/Zoning.

Our next meeting will be held on June 4th at 7pm in one of the meeting rooms at the EDI building at the corner of 25th and M Streets. We will receive a public safety update from the good folks of the RPD, then break into groups to start forming plans on tackling some neighborhood issues. Please join us.

Last Thursday I attended my first Quoit Club meet up- a walking tour of Church Hill! The Quoit Club is an organization that promotes preserving Richmond’s heritage by hosting history and architecture related social events. As if this doesn’t stimulate me enough, they also offer hors d’ouerves and cocktails (a good way to convince my non-preservation friends to come along too). Church Hill is personally one of my favorite neighborhoods in Richmond.

A few years back, RVA Crime was one of the first Google map mashups in the Richmond area. For a mix of reasons, the site faded… It was a neat way to see what’s going on around the city, it’s very cool to see Daniel working to bring it back. Style Weekly is reporting that the controversial Echo Harbor condo development at the foot of Libby Hill has been nixed:

Developer George Ross says he’s spending the next two to three months studying the riverfront site along Dock Street, which is a crucial link between Shockoe Bottom and Rocketts Landing.

Three years ago the plans included about 100 condominiums in towers as high as 12 stories, studding the riverbank just below Church Hill’s Libby Hill Park. But Ross is going back to the drawing board. “We have no plans to build residential at this point,” he says, although he offers no further details.

Church Hill, Mississippi, is a small unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Mississippi. It is located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, approximately 18 miles north of Natchez.

At the center intersection of this small community is Wagner’s Grocery, built around 1837. Just across the intersection is Christ Church, completed in 1858. Closed in the late 1990s, the store was donated to the Church Hill historic society for preservation.

The genesis of the Church Hill community was a group of people known as the “Old Maryland Settlement” that moved to the Jefferson County area from Maryland after the Revolutionary War. For many years the town was simply known as the “Maryland Settlement” until the name was eventually changed to Church Hill around 1820.

The first church of the community, known as Christ Church, was constructed of logs in 1820. The current church was part of one of the oldest Episcopal groups, dating from the 1790′s, and its design was copied from the old country churches in England.

Church Hill is also known for having the largest fresh butterbean and pea shelling operation in the United States.

Libby Hill Overlook tops Preservation Virginia’a list of 2012 Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia:

On this spot in 1737, William Byrd II declared that the beautiful view reminded him of Richmond on the Thames in England and named our city Richmond. The sister site in England is a celebrated and protected viewshed.

Threat:
The viewshed could be lost if proposed high-rise condo units are built along the river which would block this prospect.

Recommendation:
Historic Richmond Foundation and Scenic Virginia are working towards positive resolutions. We encourage the use of this designation to support a broad coalition of stakeholders to work with the developer and the City of Richmond to find a resolution that preserves this iconic view while achieving economic goals. Leighton Powell, executive director for Scenic Virginia www.scenicvirginia.org and Mary Jane Hogue, executive director for Historic Richmond Foundation www.historicrichmond.com are working with local organizers to help forward solutions.

ArchitectureRichmond takes a look at the “unexpected urban garden” that is St.John’s Mews:

The result of this effort is an unexpected urban garden that feels more curated than manicured. The various period features of the Mews, coupled with the views of the surrounding gardens and historic buildings, amount to a veritable outdoor museum of traditional English garden design. The view eastward through the alley frames the St. John’s churchyard, giving the Mews its name.
