city leaf collection schedule

The City of Richmond has published the schedule for free leaf collection and will be in the Church Hill and Fulton areas between 11/10-11/14 and 1/5-1/9. Citizens will only need to rake their leaves to the curb, and the City will take them away.

tree steward classes start 10/7; Adopt-A-Tree deadline is 10/1

Richmond Tree Stewards classes will be offered again this fall. Classes begin Oct.7; find out more and sign up! In other tree-related news, the deadline to participate in the Adopt-A-Tree Program for this year is Oct.1, with trees adopted this year to be planted late November through the end of February. all neighborhood schools are fully accredited

The Virginia Department of Education released the data on the School Accreditation Status for 2008-2009 today and all of the neighborhood schools are designated as Fully Accredited. Congratulations to Chimborazo Elementary, Bellevue Elementary, George Mason Elementary, Fairfield Elementary, Woodville Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr Middle School, Armstrong High School, and Franklin Military Academy!

2nd annual Long Walk to Freedom

Just announced is the second annual Long Walk to Freedom, set for Saturday, October 11th, 2008 at Richmond City Jail (1701 Fairfield Way). The walk is “symbolic of the difficulties and struggles that an incarcerated individual faces as he or she strives to re-enter society. A smoother transition is made possible through the aid of solution providers– food services, counseling services, legal aid, education opportunities, job training, and housing.”

The most recent installment of Richmond.com’s Ask the Mayor brings to light a series of meetings that Parks & Rec are holding towards the development of a Master Plan for the city parks. Fall registration for the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ After School Programs will take place Sept. 2 through Sept. 5 from school closing to 5:30 p.m. each day. Over the past 12 years, Better Housing Coalition has built or renovated close to 90 houses in the area. While the great majority of the activity has been in the
Church Hill Central area of the city’s Neighborhoods in Bloom program, they are also looking at a large-scale redevelopment at the former Beckstoffers on 28th Street for the near future.

West joins board of school choice organization

Keith West, the current 7th District school board representative (and who is not standing for re-election), is a new board member of the advocacy organization School Choice Virginia, joining representatives of “church schools, the Virginia Catholic Conference, home schoolers and the Family Foundation of Virginia“. SCV supports legislation that would offer tax credits to individuals and organizations that make contributions “for scholarships to allow students to transfer out of their school district to public, parochial or private schools”. The RTD supports the idea; here is a counter response by 4th district school board candidate Bert Berlin.

The City of Richmond will open three cooling shelters today at 12PM to assist residents during the anticipated heat. The shelters are located at Southside Community Center, 4100 Hull Street; the Department of Social Services, 900 East Marshall Street; and the East District Center, 701 North 25th Street.

Henrico man picked up for suspicious infant death

Richmond Police have arrested Henrico County resident Garnell Stevenson, 24, in the death of a one-year-old child at around 1PM today in the 2200 block of Creighton Road. Officially, the cause of death has not been identified, but police are investigating the death as “suspicious”. It has been alleged that he killed the infant “for taken a shit on his self”. [via]

The City of Richmond Planning Commission will hold what may be the last public hearing on the June 2008 Revised Draft Downtown Master Plan TONIGHT, July 7 @6:30PM on the 5th floor conference room in city hall.
