I must admit I do not like these events. Too many drunk people roaming the neighborhood, and several years ago, one hit my parked car and tried to get away. I have seen people urinating in the alley and just being loud. Maybe these festivals should move to a less residential area, like near the diamond.
Hey LB, good idea especially since the diamond is moving to the bottom and Church Hill will be its parking lot.
If only I believed the diamond was moving to the bottom. I think the people in the burbs would be less likely to come there. I still think that all gatherings should be held in places where residents are not affected because just like some do not like the attendants of things like the church hill reunion based on behavior, I do not like things in the Libby park area that have alcohol based on behavior.
@L B–trust me, people do that around here all the time without the excuse of a BBQ festival.

I’m pretty sure the city will have some parking associated with the ballpark.
I hope this year the vendors are done correctly to start and we avoid the Alamo fiasco. It sure would be nice if we could get all the key BBQ joints in town to make this a true BBQ contest but at least let’s get the ones in our backyard (Alamo, Ronnie’s, Halligans).
Great! Missed it last year. I miss the old HoH. Glad we have a new version. It’s a great place and beautiful view from the Libby Hill. YumYum.

I love when we have festivals in Church Hill – Hogtober/High on the Hog, Irish Festival, the Italian Festival (though it was short-lived), the bike race thing, and yes, the Church Hill Reunion. These events while briefly inconvenient for a minority of residents expose greater Richmond to our neighborhood and help to change many of the negative perceptions about CH. I’d love to see stats on home sales in CH immediately following Hogtober and the Irish Festival, because I’d bet there is a spike as Richmonders learn that our community is not the “scary ‘hood” that it was portrayed as in the 80s and 90s.
Alex, the City and MCV also have parking, but the adventurous students and others have found how cheap it is to park during the day, evening on Church Hill and take the bus. Those same buses will not stop running at the sound of Play Ball…
I agree with Amy N-B 100%. What better way to showcase our neighborhood than opening it up to the public. Festivals such as this give CH great exposure and provide a reason for many, who otherwise wouldn’t, to see our community and how wonderful it is. For those that worry about parking or people walking in the streets.. move to the suburbs. Church Hill is an urban community and I’m ready to celebrate it with some beer and BBQ in the park!
This sounds awesome! We’ve only been in Church Hill a little over a year now and this is the first I’m hearing of this.
I hate whenever someone has a valid complaint, the response is move to the suburbs. I have lived here my entire life, coming back after college because I liked the neighborhood, so it is not new to me.
No, I do not like the festivals because they are inconvenient and there are too many drunk people, but such is city life so I deal with it. The reason I posted is because it is sickening to read all of the “yeah, the Irish festival is coming” or “yes, HOTH is coming”, but if there is a church hill reunion, then it is “oh, there will be noise and trash.” All mass gatherings are like that. If I go to the folk festival, I will see trash thrown into the streets all the way to Franklin from the attendees walking back to cars, but no one says to cancel it or “uh why is that coming back.” There was even the post about a minister’s funeral that turned into a complaint about trash, parking and noise. After a NASCAR race, there is a bunch of trash outside of RIR, going into those neighborhoods, but no one tries to get rid of that event. Maybe the people that run NASCAR reimburse the people that have to clean their yards afterwards so no one complains ;)
