No drama in election results
There were no surprises in yesterday’s election.
In the State Senate race, Henry Marsh took 69% of the vote this year in defeating Preston Brown (up from 66% in the contested race on 2007).
House of Delegates representatives Jennifer McClellan and Delores McQuinn both ran unopposed.
The incumbent Circuit Court Clerk Bevill Dean claimed roughly 75% of the vote in his victory over Emmett J. Jafari.
I just want to thank all the volunteers who worked the polls in the East End yesterday.
Recently, I’ve become acutely aware of how dedicated these folks are. They don’t get paid for their service, and they attend many hours of training and instruction prior to election day. They report at the polling place before 5am and remain on site hours after the polls close at 7pm.
Voters sometimes forget that the people “running” the polls are just everyday folks, neighbors, who do this because they feel it’s a way to fulfill their civic duty/participate in the community and honor the freedom we have to vote in this country.
I used to take the poll workers for granted, now, I never will.
And if you think you can do better, and contribute to the fairness and efficiency of our polling places, PLEASE, volunteer to take the poll-worker training courses and work the polls in 2012. It’s important work, and vital to all of us.
OH! I stand very much corrected. Poll workers DO get paid for their time…but it’s not much. Think: nominal stipend.
But if getting paid would help more folks say “yes” I want to do participate that’s great.
