Mayor Jones proposes 6-story jail at current site
The mayor is proposing a six-story building to be constructed next to the current site. When finished, the city would tear down the old building and turn it into a parking lot.
The proposal would need approval from the city council. Mayor Jones is asking them to take a vote by July 25. If approved, site work would begin by the end of 2011 and construction is scheduled to be complete by September 2014.

Building just a 1,032 bed jail when they’re over capacity (1,400) at the current one. Whose to say that they would ever tear the old one down?
Typical Richmond City government! Build something that’s obsolete as soon as it’s finished…what a waste of our tax dollars. If I didn’t like my neighbors so much I would move the hell out of the city. Sadly I doubt the government (Mayor and Counsel) will ever get any better.
I was told the proposed construction/building new justice center will be LEED Silver.
No.
Gonna need more floors for all of the thugs in the east end.
Funny, channel 12 did a story on this last night and they mentioned that the building would be “nestled” back in the woods next to the hill so it wouldn’t cause any disruption for Mosby Court. Really? WTF?!?!?!?!
Well, well, well…who would have thought? Corruption at it’s best with the Mayor:

On a serious note and aside from the previous poster’s “tax dollars are going to waste” argument, after hearing from people (former inmates) about it and having to sadly visit people there, I think its long overdue!
I heard a comment on news or in article that we’re trying to also post more non-violent offenders on work release and/or house arrest, which is a good idea. If this approach were taken more frequently, perhaps the jail itself wouldnt be so overcrowded in the first place anyway (among other reasons for those options, which i believe are sometimes better than jail-time)
However, it does probably need to be expanded because realistically probably not too many are going to be let out/put on home release…
On a lighter note, is this new building gonna block our VIEW??? We cant have a jail blocking a pretty view of our city.
Yeah, yeah, its ridiculous, but it came to mind. the last thing we want is a jail blocking views… C’mon!
oops and i know it was “it’s” not “its” for long overdue. ;)
Why not keep the miserable old jail for the really bad guys and use all that money for (proven) mental health programs and treatment for non-violent drug offenders.
Too funny!
