Cannon exhibition up through January
The Richmond Times-Dispatch is honoring philanthropist (and former Church Hill resident) Thomas Cannon:
Cannon died in 2005 at age 79, but he left behind a legacy of giving. [...] Cannon’s salary as a postal worker never topped $30,000, but the World War II Navy veteran and his wife believed in living simply so they could give money away. His first donation when he was 47 went to a woman’s club for its work at an elementary school. He usually gave gifts of $1,000 at a time to people of all races, ages, nationalities and incomes. Overall, he gave more than $156,000.
The exhibition is in the lobby of the Richmond Times-Dispatch building at 300 East Franklin Street and will be up through January. Mon-Fri 8AM-6PM FREE.
Mr & Mrs Cannon lived at 725 N. 22nd Street in Union Hill.
Following Mr. Cannon’s departure from this Earth in 2005, Mr. Ralph Oliver (another notable Union Hill resident) restored the Cannon’s home.
Mr. Oliver’s loving restoration of the Cannon’s home is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Mr. Cannon and his spirit of giving.

Thank you for the kind words…….I had the honor and pleasure to meet and talk with Mr. Cannon in the last few months of his life. He made me laugh and I felt honored as he shared insights into living and dieing. After his passing his presence was felt by all of us that worked on his home of 40 years .
It must have been a happy home.
