Reply to comment #11 “another group wanted to take over. . . and demanded that Penny Cemetary Fund back away.” I would like to know who this group was. As coordination or the restoration efforts any gruop that approaches must speak and get approval from us. In addition, any group that is claiming to raise any monies on behalf of the cemetery must submit a proposal for our approval. This is standard policy within any governmental, or non-profit organization. We have yet to receive a proposal from the Penny Fund on their intent and purpose for any monies that they are claiming to raise on behalf of the cemetery.

Regarding comment #10 we have had timber companies to come out and inspect the timber, they had a species name for the wood, but as you can see it is still there.

There are companies that will pay for timber, it might be worthwhile looking into that, it may defray some of the cost.

I like to thank John, David and all of the volunteers for their efforts. My great-great grandparents, W.I. Johnson are buried in Evergreen.

Agree – they deserve a BIG shut out. John Shuck, David Darnell plus scores of volunteers have been chipping away at the cemetery for a couple of years.

Maggie Walker’s site was the nicest I’ve seen it since I’ve been going there. They did an incredible job out there the weekend of the 24th.

The RTD today has a piece on the clean-up and a slide show of images from around the cemetery:

Evergreen's majority owner, Isaiah Entzminger of UK Corp., could not be reached late last week, but he has previously called the cemetery a bad investment and said it's the responsibility of families to maintain it. Lewis said she and others are stepping in because the arrangement clearly isn't working. "It's essentially mowing somebody else's front yard," she said, "but it's a yard they can't handle."
