A good start at Evergreen Cemetery

Alfred D. Price

The Penny Cemetery Fund’s big clean-up at Evergreen Cemetery was today. A rotating set of volunteers and a dedicated crew of men with chainsaws & a wood-chipper reclaimed at least a half-acre from the dense forest covering most of the 60+ acre cemetery. One of the more than 30 graves uncovered today was that of A.D.Price of the historic Jackson Ward funeral home.

Thanks to all of you that came out. You and MC Hernandez’s crew were amazing.

A little slide show of the day – look close for our hero, John Murden taking on one section.

The RTD today has a piece on the clean-up and a slide show of images from around the cemetery:

Evergreen’s majority owner, Isaiah Entzminger of UK Corp., could not be reached late last week, but he has previously called the cemetery a bad investment and said it’s the responsibility of families to maintain it.

Lewis said she and others are stepping in because the arrangement clearly isn’t working.

“It’s essentially mowing somebody else’s front yard,” she said, “but it’s a yard they can’t handle.”

Wasn’t the Maggie Walker site already reclaimed last year by another volunteer group?
They deserve a shout out too.

Agree – they deserve a BIG shut out. John Shuck, David Darnell plus scores of volunteers have been chipping away at the cemetery for a couple of years.

Maggie Walker’s site was the nicest I’ve seen it since I’ve been going there. They did an incredible job out there the weekend of the 24th.

The photos are incredible. Many, many thanks to all of those folks who are taking on the herculean task of cleaning up Evergreen. I hope more people will help!

I like to thank John, David and all of the volunteers for their efforts. My great-great grandparents, W.I. Johnson are buried in Evergreen.

The follow-up cleanup scheduled for today is cancelled because of the weather.

There are companies that will pay for timber, it might be worthwhile looking into that, it may defray some of the cost.

My memory is that another group wanted to take this over, and demanded that the Penny Cemetary Fund back away. Has any work been done since then?
