Shooting in Whitcomb
The RTD is reporting that “a man in his 20s was walking in the 2300 block of Ambrose Street about 9 p.m. when a shot fired from a vehicle hit him in the torso.” The victim is still alive as of this morning; no arrest has been made. This same block has already seen one homicide this year.

Peter Paul man arrested for Broad Street robbery
Reed Williams has a story about a robbery downtown last night that comes back to a local man:
Police chased the suspect and apprehended him at North First and Broad streets. David Evans, 18, of the 1800 block of North 22nd Street was arrested in connection with the robbery, police said. He was smiling as officers escorted him to a police van.

2001 East Broad goes before Planning Commission on Monday
The agenda for the 11/2 City Planning Commission meeting (PDF) indicates that the commission will be considering a change in hours for ChildSavers (PDF) and a special use permit “for the purpose of a mixed-use, multi-family development” (PDF) for the addresses that constitute the big vacant field on Broad Street between 20th and 21st Streets. School Board moving quickly on new schools plan?
In a follow-up to Mayor Jones’ push for a new Huguenot High School, the RTD is reporting that “the School Board will meet Thursday for the first of two scheduled work sessions to discuss building new schools” and that “a decision on which schools to build could come as early as Nov. 16.” Is this one of those “School Board meetings where you can be involved in this process”? If not, when is that supposed to happen?

A Hard Days Night and Second Flyte set for the Robinson
A Hard Days Night & Second Flyte (Beatles and Byrds tribute bands) will play at the Robinson Theater on November 14 as part of a fundraiser for Sportable, a local non-profit that sponsors recreation and sports programs to those injured or born with a disability.

Initial reports from the VA State Board of Elections and city’s results had it right: Cynthia Newbille will be the new City Council 7th District representative, and that Delores McQuinn and Jennifer McClellan will return to the House of Delegates.

Murder down 33% from last year
Killings in the East End are down 33% this year from last year’s already low count. Although murder city-wide has ticked up from last year, the “notorious” East End continues to show improvement. There have been only 8 people killed by other people in the East End this year (and none since August), as compared to 12 at this time through 2008.

Local B&E suspect arrested in Newport News

Direct from Sector 111’s Lt.Laino: Sterling Antonio Lewis, wanted in Newport News on 7 felony property crimes and the suspect in several B&Es in the Church Hill/Union Hill area, was arrested in Newport News yesterday. Lt.Laino specifically said that he wanted citizens to be “aware of the great news” and thanks everyone for their assistance.
