I don't think anyone here is naive about the deer population. Nor is anyone suggesting that the cops acted inappropriately. And I'm sure everyone is glad that no-one got hurt.

BUT

if a bunch of rowdys chased the deer around the neighborhood for a cheap thrill until it injured itself and had to be put down - well it should be pretty clear that that is cruel / unnecessary / sH!tTy / etc.

Hope you all feel this way after a poor critter jumps in front of your car and causes damage. The deer population of Virginia is to high for a health population.

It is a shame that they had to shoot the poor critter but thankfully it didn't injure itself or anyone else, and it fed someone. It would be nice to think the city would tranquilize a deer and move it, but that's not realistic. All things considered the police did what they thought was best at the time.

When I left home yesterday about 4:30, there was a group of young guys gathered in front my house. Before I pulled off they went running across the street across a field. I didn't think anything of it other than I hoped they weren't up to any mischief. My mother called and told me a neighbor had called her telling her that a deer was stuck on her fence. I thought she meant a deer was stuck on her fence since she has deer in her neighborhood off Creighton Road. I drove by her house and didn't see her car, people, or a deer, I realized she was at my house. She told me when she arrived as the police did and one told her they had gotten a call about a loose dog. She had heard from others gathered that the neighborhood youngsters had chased it and was injured when it was hit by a car. So, they had to put the poor deer down.

Funny thing is, we had been talking about deer as late as Sunday and we had joked for years that if one did make it into Woodville/Fairfield Court, which probably hadn't seen deer in 100 years, it would be chased by the kids in the neighborhood and confused for a large dog. Amazing how it came true.

Thanks John.

Seems like getting the folks out from Maymont's nature reserve or some other rescue group might also have worked.
