Vandalism at the Grace Street overlook?

Maybe we can invite that boy scout troop back? The ones who donated the sign? A new coat of paint, some touch-ups for the bench, and a little landscaping would make a big difference.
It looks more like someone may have hit either the chain or one of the poles with their car. There’s a few pieces of plastic and what appears to be a car part in the picture.
Durn! Someone gone ape on our gate! That thing was fine a week ago when it appeared on the boston.com hurricane bill piece.

That’s a lot of damage… seems like a vehicle had to be involved… but how did they not go down the hill on the other side? (long way down there….. and steep to boot!)
The non emergency police number is 646-5100. They need to be notified of acts of vandalism like this. They collect data and analyze it to spot patterns and can possibly get more resources to prevent future acts of vandalism.
I was shocked too as I took a guided tour of 25 folks on Sunday to the Overlook. Fortunately, we are in the process of working with City Park and Recreation on a new design for Richmond Hill and the Overlook. It will involve a walking path around Richmond Hills down to Franklin St., replacing the ballards, three new park benches, replacing the old boy scout vandalized sign with a new one and adding another interpetive sign with the 1865 photo taken at the exact same site. All this at no cost to CHA, that is if the City is allowed not to have to replace the steps that go nowhere (quite costly thing).
More on this later as the City now is dealing with CAR and the design and approval of the concept etc.
I reported it to the police yesterday. If it was some kind of accident, the impact was huge.
Is it possible to place a surveillance camera in this location? A camera pointing toward the City? This area has had a looong history of late night troubles.
I don’t know why you automatically assume this is vandalism. Maybe the posts did their job and prevented someone from driving off the side of the Hill! Who cares about a fence? I’m glad no one was hurt. Fences can be replaced. People can not.
it was definetly a car that went through the chain. a few residents of the atc building were talking about seeing it happen late saturday night. the car quickly went in reverse and left.
It somehow never crossed my mind that someone would try to drive off the hill like that.

there has been a lot of blatent vandalism down at the Church Hill Dog Park recently too- boards being torn off, the bulletin board being broken into and the rule-signs being torn away… i don’t know why people would blatently attempt to ruin something that is trying to make our neighborhood better! But if anyone sees people down in the dog park after dark– PLEASE report it to the police immediately so we can try and nip this behavior in the bud!
If it was a car that caused this damage, the operator of the car should be held accountable. It’s ok that a car goes off the road with enough velocity to do this damage? Good thing there were no pedestrians there when it happened, don’t you think?
Residents saw this happen late Saturday night. Considering the rapid escape, it sounds like another intoxicated driver endangering all of us that go on foot and bicycle for transportation.
indeed…. I mean, how fast would you have to be going down a dead end street in a residential area in order to take out steel anchored in concrete like that?
If this was caused by a car, the driver is damn lucky they didn’t plummet right down the hill.
