Williams takes the helm at Richmond Virginia Seminary
The Richmond Free Press has word that Dr. Larry Williams Sr. has been named as the new president of Richmond Virginia Seminary on Cedar Street:
“It’s an exciting opportunity,” the 59-year-old minister said this week. His goal: To build up flagging enrollment at the 28-year-old seminary by using technology and outreach to congregations across the state. The seminary currently enrolls about 100 students, or more than 30 fewer students than in recent years.
I’ve always been curious about that school. According to the Association of Theological Schools, it is not actually an accredited seminary. The RVS web site says they are exempt from state certification. Does that mean their degrees aren’t comparable to other Bachelor and Master’s degrees? Just curious.
It’s hard to compare degrees. But accreditation is often used by folks hiring for jobs (academic, pastoral,or whatever) to ensure that basic levels of professional & academic integrity are maintained.
Accreditation is a costly & time-consuming process. So just because a school isn’t accredited doesn’t mean that they’re not giving a good education. But it does mean it’s harder to ensure it.
FWIW, the article says that one of his goals is to pursue accreditation.
