Council considering 100% real estate tax exemption
City Council is considering offering a hefty tax break on the real estate taxes for new constructing in certain areas with a high number of empty lots, “including North Church Hill, Carver, and Highland Park”. With around 1500 vacant lots in the city, the possible 100% exemption on real estate tax for 5 years could be expected to lead to 200 new homes per year. [via]

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities kicks off 2009 Movie Night in the Park tonight with a showing of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa at Jefferson Hill Park. The showing will begin around dark.

On Sunday, July 5th, from 1-5PM, WRIR invites you to a community picnic and kite fly in Church Hill’s historic Chimborazo Park. There will be plenty of space to lay down a blanket and put a kite in the air. Frisbees, hula hoops, and acoustic instruments are also welcome!

The crooked house at 2200 Marshall Street that was much appreciated back in March is on the way to being restored. Now in the experienced hands of David Cooley’s Restoration Builders of Virginia, this house will certainly be something to watch over the weeks to come.

City condemning vacant houses with lead contamination

An RTD report on the perils of lead paint in older homes drops that the city has been testing vacant houses in the city for lead contamination:
“The city will give us the addresses of vacant properties, and we are starting to go out and test these vacant properties now,” said Michael Welch of the Richmond City Health District. “If they have lead-based paint issues, then we are going to condemn the property so that they’re fixed before people can move into them.”

Daylight shootout on R Street

Police are looking for a white van and a blue car involved in a shootout on R Street a few minutes ago. The two vehicles exchanged at least 5 shots between 21st and 22nd Streets. No one outside of the vehicles was inured, though a house was struck by a stray bullet.
