Voting for Richmond Sheriff on June 9
One of the local offices in play in the Democratic primary on June 9 is the position of Richmond City Sheriff.
Sheriff C.T.Woody is running for re-election on a platform of promises kept, and a record of “improved jail security and fiscal responsibility”. Major Antionette Irving is challenging with a campaign emphasizing an impressive career with the Henrico Sheriff’s office, a record of community involvement, and a desire to “[raise] the standards of the Sheriff’s office”.
As for community involvement, Major Antionette Irving has done an incredible amount with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club here in Church Hill. She is constantly there, and consistently involved.
I affirm the comment posted by PTG. Major Irving(Antionette) is a true citizen! Her committment to our beloved community has been modeled for years. Her sincere concern and actual participation in serving young people through her foundation are to be commended.
Mr. Coleman, does that mean that, as a member of the Richmond School Board and an elected official, you are endorsing Major Irving? I have no problem with that, just am wondering, thanks.
I have met Antionette Irving and found her approach to managing the City Jail and its population to be refreshing and forward thinking. I encourage everyone to take time to look at her views. She is dedicated to raising the professionalism in the Sheriff’s office and I support her in her run for that office.
She would have to do a better job then Woody.
Major Irving will bring the leadership to the Sheriff’s Office that needed. It seems that nothing is reported at the jail when we know things are happening. Irving has the leadership to run the Sheriff’s Ofiice. Which 20+ years of experience in a SHERIFF’S Department she has the skills and ability to put the department on top. Woody thinks being a POLICE OFFICER gives him the edge and experience to be Sheriff and it does not. Let’s put someone in office that will make us all proud and someone that will run a ethical and professional department, not one ruled by intimidation and lies as the WOODY administration has.

Why is it NOW Woody is so concerned about community events and the over-crowding of the jail. He didn’t have that concern prior to Irving running for Sheriff. Where is his training for the deputies that work there??? He’s trained his Police friends, paying them TOP salaries and has done NOTHING for the deputies that work work with inmates. Where is the medical care for the inmates??? Yeah he’s gone to generic drugs but that’s common sense stuff. What about a medical team when around the clock. Even a school has a nurse in the build when while the students are there, but not the Richmond City Jail. Why? Woody claims he’s done so much, PLEASE tell me and the citizens of Richmond WHAT?

Now look what is going on at the jail.
The Richmond City Jail has some crooked Officials. They threaten the inmates. They beat them. They tawnt them. They steal thier mail. They do not give notice of mail that has been taken. They discard mail they don’t want sent out. They cover up for each other. They mess with the inmates canteen money. They lie and start rumors on inmates they don’t like, hoping they will get beat up by the other inmates. They take away anything they think that will upset them, like books, writing paper, cards, pictures, or anything to try and upset them so much that the inmate will retaliate, so that the Officials can press charges against them and make it look like it’s the inmates fault. There is no hot water most of the time. There is no heat half the time. The windows are busted out thruout the jail, allowing cold air, rain, snow, etc to come in. There is no cooling in the summer time with degrees’s of 110 or more in the locked overcrowded cells. The jail has at least 300 extra inmates nearly all the time, if not more, on a daily basis. If you complain about something they stick you in the hole. They say you are the problem. When you ask for a grivance slip they don’t bring them to you, or if they do they say it’s filled out wrong, over and over. They discriminate in the jail and let you know it. Some totally ignore you, when you ask for help, to see a doctor, to send out mail, etc. They break the rules, polocies and law. Some of the officials in the Richmond City Jail think they are above the law. The Senators, The Delegates, The Mayor, The Attorney General, Prison Legal News, The United States Post Office and several others were all informed in the last few days and I wish more people who have loved ones in the jail would stand up for the treatment the inmates are getting. Yes, they commited a crime and yes they must pay, but that doesn’t give the right for the Lt /Internal Affairs or Sheriff to do as they please.
