something new on Jefferson in 3 weeks

i heard that,then i saw he had the sign out the other day, but i also heard that he was no where near ready. how come CHPN always wants confirmations? where are your hard hitting facts? Aren’t you supposed to just tell us it’s open?

The address is 2202 Jefferson Ave.

There are current building permits on file. The building is actually owned by Tom Brickman but the applicant is Mr. Davis.

It is listed as a Carry Out Restaurant called “Alamo BBQ Co.”. This is one case where the building fits the business even if it was most likely a gas station originally. No idea when it was redesigned as a diner / restaurant?

I talked to the guy opening it a little while ago and he seemed to know his way around the BBQ business. Finally something tasty and quick in the neighborhood!

My best friend is a Long Island Jew whom I’ve known since we worked together at UNC-Chapel Hill’s student newspaper. A most fascinating character, Kurt is a vegan anti-death penalty activist who is a connoisseur of Southern Rock, the Boston Celtics, karaoke, and, yes, sweet tea.

Now living in Philadelphia, but still a frequent visitor to points South, Kurt espouses a theory that the geographical line of demarcation between authentic Sweet Tea and, at best, a poor facsimile thereof, is precisely the spot where US-1 crosses I-85 just north of South Hill, Virginia.

Below this point on the map his palate can be easily satiated; above, not so much.

Just yesterday Kurt and I spent the better part of the afternoon negotiating the timing of his next sojourn here in Church Hill.

I will leave it to him to decide if any of the beverages sold by this new venture deserve the moniker, “Sweet Tea,” and, if so, how this might affect his “Southern Tea Theory.” Which, by the way, would also be a great name for a band…

i always wanted to live in the taco stand, but i’ll take BBQ instead.

Same here, Derek. I got awfully spoiled by my local taqueria when I was living in Los Angeles (though our sweet tea is still better).

Cross the Manchester bridge. Right on Semmes and stay on it after it becomes Forest Hill Avenue. Come to 4600 block on left, Cielito Lindo, Good fish tacos as well as usual menu. Also at South of the James Market on Saturdays starting in May.

There is a Mexican restaurant on 18th street for those of you looking for convenient Mexican food.

I also know the co-owner Michael Chenault personally, and know he is an excellent chef! I have never had anything he’s fixed that was not top notch. Great location for family picnics at the park and BBQ on the go!

Hoping these guys succeed. Keep in mind, no liquor as it is a “Take Out” place.

The roof tiles could use a good coat of bright red paint to make the building pop and easily seen.

Being called Alamo, wonder what “kind” of BBQ they will serve? Like with ice tea, we are in a precarious place on the map concerning BBQ. Finely Chopped with Clear Vinegar Sauce (North Carolina style which I personally prefer but is hard to find outside of Pierce’s in Williamsburg) or Red Sauce with Pulled Pork (which I have had my fill of as everyone around here serves the same). Yet if it is Texan style like the restaurant name suggests, that would be Sliced Brisket.
