Great post John! The thing I love about this place is that, more often than not, any time of day, you will find the regulars, the “old timers” chatting around the counter over a cup of coffee and a donut on a little plate. Like you’ve stepped back 40 years in time. Then… there are the donuts. Awesome. I highly recommend the “Old Fashioned”. Crisp on the outside, perfect on the inside.
I wish I didn’t have to drive across town to get them, but they’re worth it. I guess it’s not trendy or snooty enough to have in the west end. Krispy Kreme is good, predictably good. But they don’t have the variety or style of a homemade doughnut.
I miss Rainbow…
I was crushed when Rainbow Donuts closed. Looks like next weekend I will have travel to Country Style. They look great.
I’ll have to try one. mmmm. donut.
Chocolate iced cream filled. Mmmmm.
I love Country Style Doughnuts. South Side is jealous.
I would go today if I thought I could eat just one. John I wish you didn’t post those pictures.
I’ve got more :)
Hey John – If you ever get sick of teaching, you could totally be a menu photographer. Sometimes those pics are so funny that it gets in the way of me being hungry anymore!
John… you are evil… but in a good way ;)
And also, happy birthday John!!!!!
Birthday?! OK… NO Cake pictures. I’m already jonzin’ for a plain glazed. I do not need to be dreaming about Black Forest, Carrot, Vanilla with Butter Cream icing… oh crap… there I go.
Happy Birthday John!!!!
I’m wondering: is that your own personal selection of donuts, or were you sticking your stanky ol’ camera into the donut case at the store?
Oh, I didn’t see that second photo up top. You were sticking the stanky camera into your own box o’calories. My bad :)
the “Old Fashioned” ones are THE BEST! This is the only place that I like old fashioned style donuts! We need to get these guys to open one in the west end!!
No empty box photos? :)
It takes a normal person more than one day to work through a dozen of these. My only excuse is that my camera batteries are dead.
By the way, John – you share a birthday with Mike Schank, (http://tinyurl.com/dauwdw) the coolest guy in one of my fave films, American Movie.
Congrats!
That was cruel -now I can’t think of anything else. Will anyone be making a doughnut run?
Happy Birthday, John!
Do the glazed have a nice chew to them?
Are they really open 24/7?
The sign says 24 HOURS but not how many days…
WHY HAVE I NEVER BEEN HERE!??!
yes they are open 24/7 but they are closed on Monday’s…. even God had to rest.
gray – yesssssss… they are chewy & perfect
These donuts are the real deal. My favorite thing to do is stop there after leaving the airport and taking Williamsburg Road back to Church Hill. The Blueberry Chip and Maple Glazed are my top favorites. And the people who work there are so nice.
They do have some GREAT donuts!
And A.C.O.R.N. has always provided Country Style Donuts for its workshops for 10 years! (The cinnamon crullers are my personal favorite, and they’re worth the extra 15 lbs.)
These donuts are worth traveling from King George, Va to set down with a cup of coffee and a donut (sometimes hot out of the oven)I have done it many times and and my friend has been going there every day for over 40 years, YES THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!!!
Went there this morning for the first time. Awesome. The cinnamon and sugar one rocked.
Richmond.com has picked this up, with more words but with less enticing photographs.
Thanks for bringing this thread up again John… I was just headed out the door for coffee and becaue of you I now HAVE get a donut. I am SO weak ;P
Country Style Donuts a sweet institution (RTD 4/6/09)
These REALLY are the best donuts in the area! I’ve been going there for 10 years! No other shop can beat them! And the “old fashioned” are my fave with coffee!
