High marks for whoever put this building back together. I hope everybody realizes what an expensive project this must have been just to get the signage back on the Robinson. This is the best news I have seen in a long time in this part of Church Hill. Congrats to all involved!
I checked the before picture at the link provided by Amy and all I can say is “Wow!” What a great renovation. Maybe something similar could be done to the vacant theater by the post office on 25th.
It does look great. I am not crazy about the blue/cream/red combination as there is some clashing there but still. I am guessing there will be lighted venue signage where the bricked in windows are?
It is a shame. The same owners of the Robinson also own the East End Theater on 25th. It was slated for demolition in May last year because the owners showed no interest nor answered city letters as for their intent and it exceeded criteria for demolition. That was intercepted by Art Dahlberg and in June they were given 4 months to put a roof on the building and it is now 7 months later and still no roof and nothing else. It isn’t a matter of them not having finances and curious why they jumped over this building when it was in front of the Robinson as far as project wise?
Steven, where are you getting your information about the ownership? I just checked the City’s tax records, and they show two completely different owners for the two properties.
How exciting! I grew up in Norfolk, home of the Naro Expanded Cinema (www.narocinema.com), a wonderful indie theater with a great balcony and the best popcorn around, and would love to see a similar theater succeed in Church Hill. Another historic theater in Norfolk – the Granby Theater – was converted into a club. I wonder what the plans are for the Robinson . . . And ditto to Steven’s question. What’s going on with the East End Theater?
Are they going to show movies here? I thought I read something that this would be an arts center, but that there would not be any actual movie equipment in the place. Which I thought was a shame.
Then someone is altering books. I did a check back in October 2008 and it definitely showed Kathryn Wiley and Earl and Gail Johnson owning both (Wiley being the daughter). BUT, under the Sale Information there hasn’t been an ownership change since 9/20/2006. Doesn’t that raise a red flag on its own?
I even talked to Art Dahlberg back then about the two buildings and know I searched ownership then so…???
I bet a trip to search deeds will find the truth. Or contacting the SCC to find out who founded 2903 Q Street LLC.
I am wondering just who Charles Cochran is? I noted that he is linked to Spectrum Contractors some way and that most properties worked on list the address as a LLC as the owners…”611 N 21st, 1123 25th, 2903 Q, etc…” Wonder why the two buildings back in October showed the Johnson’s owing them? Odd.

I wonder how long that pretty marquee will last before it’s full of holes from rocks/bullets… I give it 3 months at the most.
