Say it ain’t so
Church Hill Herbs, 25th Street stalwart and recently highlighted in a Washington Post article about the area, is looking for someone take over their lease.
Selling flowers, gifts, and a limited wine stock, the shop has been on 25th Street for over a decade. Shop owner Carolyn Worssam says that despite the support of dedicated regular customers, she is unable to make the rent on the building and is looking for someone take over the lease.

I am very, very sad to hear this! I hope that she can get more neighborhood support and be able to stay in business. I really would hate to see this shop close. She is a fabulous florist and she and her husband are great neighbors.
People are just not buying luxury or items not part of daily necessity living these days. Everyone is feeling the pinch along those lines and are getting back to basics.
Even the bridal industry is being hit hard – fewer large church weddings, less spent on rehearsals or receptions, brides registering for stoneware and stainless rather than fine china, crystal and silver to pass on as heirlooms. And florist are being hit in that area too.

I wish I could help, but my budget is so tight these days and all the items sold there are simply items I don’t need on a day to day basis. My paycheck goes to groceries, kid’s school expenses, gas, and the occaissional night out.
Eric is right, all these niche businesses are feeling the pinch as we cut luxuries out of our budget.
It’s a shame to see a pioneer business like this go down. No doubt others will follow. BP has listed several downtown restaurants that are teetering.
That is why I wonder how all of these other places can stay afloat these days. Even nights out for dinner have become a luxury. New places like Y’all’s and the Ice Cream Shop – I wonder how they can stay afloat starting up at the worst time in today’s history. Or how even “yet another” restaurant can even sustain itself at the 401 N 27th building – if that ever comes to pass? They would have to offer something quite unique that appeals to all tastes as well as have a gimmick of some sort to make them stand out from the rest (of course after they find land for parking spaces).

Even if you don’t need flowers or gifts due to the hard economic times, there is a decent wine selection at Church Hill Herbs.

There has been alot of talk about my leaving Church Hill. The sign is on the building because I need to sublet my lease to someone. I am responsible for the lease payment whether I am in the building or not so I am staying until the economy turns around or I find a subleter. In the meantime, what I need from the community is your support. If you need flowers I would appreciate it if you would give us your consideration.
