Oakwood loses buried woman

wric has details on a recent confusion at Oakwood Cemetery:

He says that Oakwood staff told him that she was buried in a different part of the cemetery than from where he remembers her funeral service was held. City officials said Patricia was buried towards the back, but the family argued that her funeral service was all the way in the front of the cemetery. [...] Wednesday, the city unearthed the grave where the cemetery said Patricia Turner was buried. It turned out to not be her body, and they do not know where she is buried.

Doesn’t surprise me. While doing ownership research for our house and their grave sites, I ran across several strange situations for Oakwood including burials which were moved because of them being in the wrong location. You also have many lost bodies because of the fact that probably half of the flat headstones older than 50 years have sunk below the ground and lost unless a “family member” comes and unearth them. Unfortunately many of the older graves have no one to come and take care of them any longer so…

I ran across a couple of people like that. I probed the ground and unearthed a few but I also asked the grounds keeper to help locate and unearth one I know is at a particular plot buried in the 1930s but it has yet to be done months later. Headstones knocked over also remain on the ground including in the newer section and just bury and mow around them rather than upright the stones… LAZY and non caring.

There was some vandalism there a few months ago where a number of headstones were knocked over or broken.

The ones I speak of, including one in a newer section near where a friend was buried a couple years ago, have been knocked over and still that way for several years – not just months.
