October 29, 2008

this is probably not about Ronald Bond

A recent reader submission:

Recently, on East Franklin Street, campaign posters are being torn down and thrown into storm drains. We are proud of our candidate and have high hopes for him, and we are sure you feel the same way about yours. What we don’t understand is why it is necessary for some supporters to trespass on our property and vandalize our house. Is this merely to prove a point? If so it’s really not a good message to send.

We are cordially requesting our neighbors not behave in such an uncivilized manner. We respect your right to choose whom to vote for, please respect ours. Regardless of political affiliation, we have more right to display our support than you have to enter our yard uninvited and remove our property. Thank you, we are

Very truly yours,
Your neighbors on East Franklin Street

    Thank you for your eloquent letter. Ditto. Many people on this blog like to belittle and bash anyone whose views differ from theirs as well.

    is this at the south end of franklin? i noticed some political signs in the parkish area between two houses there which are now gone. just curious if anyone knows if there is a city policy on political signs on public property?

    @jeg:

    A recent message from Julia Stokes of the Clean City Commission:

    During this campaign season, we are starting to see more and more campaign signs being put up in and around Church Hill. These are to be displayed on private property only. If you see signs in tree wells, attached to telephone polls or on sidewalks, then you are allowed to remove them if they become a concern.

    explains why they are gone.

    Actually, the signs in question were on private property. Someone came into our enclosed front yard to take them. Not only that, one sign was replaced with the other candidate’s sign. Clear disreguard for one’s privacy and property.

    Read this article http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/search.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-10-21-0105.html . A black minister’s Obama sign was vandalized and replaced with a confederate flag.

    Someone took one of my Obama signs a few weeks ago.

    My friend living in the University of Richmond area, west Henrico, can’t seem to keep an Obama sign in her yard to save her life. Maybe she should be on the news too.

    Living in Church Hill, not only is Tayne Renmark living in a political minority, but a racial one as well. Hmmm.

    P.S. Regarding the inrich.com article, I would say the same is probably true regarding Leroy C. McLaughlin.

    totally inappropriate for them to remove signs on your private property. just wanted to clarify that we weren’t talking about the ones you put up on public property.
