shooting at 25th and Cedar

We’ve gotten a few emails and a drunken phone call about a shooting last night, with nothing official yet:

There was a shooting last night around 10:15 on the corner of 25th and Cedar. Three shots left a Mr. Haywood, a retired teacher from Armstrong, injured. No word on his condition.

According to the RTD, Haywood McCallum, is in serious but stable condition.

Damn it! Haywood is a Church Hill/Union Hill institution! He’s one of the nicest guys I know. My heartfelt sympathies for his kin.

I’ve only gotten to know Haywood over the past year, but I’ve learned that he is a trusting, kind-hearted soul, who probably tried to reason with the perpetrators; with the hope he could help them see the error in their ways.

Haywood, best wishes for a speedy recovery. There are so many folks who respect and admire you, I only wish I knew who did this to you, so I could report them to the police. There had to have been somebody who saw what happened, I trust he/she will speak up and help bring justice in this tragic, senseless crime.

    From the RTD:

Police said 56-year-old Haywood McCallum Jr. was shot about 10:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of Cedar Street. He was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition today, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Alicia Rasin, acting as a spokeswoman for McCallum’s family, said he is a retired long-time teacher at Richmond’s Armstrong High School.

Rasin said McCallum was getting into his car when two men approached him and someone opened fire.

The second shooting took place about 11:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of P Street when a 17-year-old male was shot in the leg, police said. He was dropped off at Richmond Community Hospital with an injury that did not appear life-threatening, said police Lt. Mauricio Tovar.

I live in very close proximity to Mr. McCallum. He is a kind man who did not deserve this. I can tell you that when the neighbors heard his cries for help, many of us ran outside, but noone was there in time to see anything.

Please, if anyone saw anything call Crime Stoppers or the RPD.

Here is to a speedy recovery, Mr. McCallum.

I am so sorry to hear this happened to
Mr. McCallum. Teachers are near and dear to my heart. I hope for a full recovery.

This is just another reason that every Joe Six-Pack does not need a gun. Our police officers need guns to keep us safe. That should suffice!

    Dear Lynn,

Do you actually think that the person who violently attacked Mr.McCallum was a responsible gun owner? Think about it.

    Mr.McCallum,

You and your family are in our thoughts and our prayers. Be well.

My prayers are with the McCallum family. I pray that the person or persons that committed this unnecessary act step forward. I’ve know Haywood for well over twenty years as a teacher and friend. I was very upset when I got the news from my mother who lives not too far from Haywood. However, I know that the God we serve is truly awsome and He will bring Haywood through this storm. God Bless!
