all neighborhood schools are fully accredited

The Virginia Department of Education released the data on the School Accreditation Status for 2008-2009 today and all of the neighborhood schools are designated as Fully Accredited. Congratulations to Chimborazo Elementary, Bellevue Elementary, George Mason Elementary, Fairfield Elementary, Woodville Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr Middle School, Armstrong High School, and Franklin Military Academy!

The Virginia DOE says that “school accreditation ratings reflect student achievement on Standards of Learning Assessments and other tests in English, history/social science, mathematics and science. Ratings are based on the achievement of students on tests taken during the previous academic year and may also reflect a three-year average of achievement.” To be considered Fully Accredited, schools must generally “achieve pass rates of 70 percent or above in all four content areas.”

The mosaic in the photo above is a rendering of Martin Luther King Middle School. Notice the round buildings at the right. The main entrance on Mosby Street is at the S in “Science”.

Statewide, 87 percent of the middle schools are accredited.

Blackwell Elementary, Elkhardt Middle, Oak Grove/Bellemeade Elementary, and Swansboro Elementary are “Accredited with Warning”. Chandler Middle and Thomas C. Boushall Middle are “Conditionally Accredited”. The rest of the city schools are “Fully Accredited”.

A big part of what has made our school more and more successful in the few years that I have been include both a stable and supportive building-level administration and better retention of talented teachers. Also, the students are coming more prepared from the elementary schools (for the most part :)

The RTD has a good piece about MLK today: 7 of 9 middle schools earn accreditation - Richmond’s King Jr., led by Principal Aaron Dixon, succeeds in SOL testing

Of the city’s nine middle schools, seven earned state accreditation this year, up from three last year.

Nowhere is the change more evident than at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.

Sitting on the edge of the Mosby Court public-housing complex, the school has served one of the city’s toughest student populations since it opened in 1963. While the name has changed from Mosby to King — in part to distance the school from the public perception of crime in the Mosby neighborhood — its challenge has not: reaching a student population that is predominantly poor, mobile and subject to academic failure.

What 6th grade History teacher, John Murden, does not quote is the fact that the scores in the history section of the SOL was the one with the most improvement. You deserve some recognition, also.
