ACORN decorative plaster workshop set for Sept.20

A.C.O.R.N. is pleased to offer a hands-on / on-site workshop on how to repair decorative plaster detailing in historic homes. Master craftsman Bill MacArthur will conduct this exclusive workshop on a singularly beautiful historic property. Participants will learn all the steps involved in decorative plaster repair and will have a chance to do some of the repairs under Mr. MacArthur’s supervision. This is one-of-a-kind chance to see plaster molding recreated using the same century-old techniques that were used by craftsman who’s work can only be found in historic homes.

Date: Saturday, September 20, 2008
Time: 9:00am - 12:00 pm
Where: 719 Spottswood Road, Byrd Park
Richmond, VA 23220
Directions/Parking: At the corner of Spottswood and Trafford Road facing
Byrd Park; parking available on street

Cost: $10 for A.C.O.R.N. Members, $15 for the general public

Take advantage of this opportunity to see a beautiful historic home under renovation, learn plaster mold creation from a true craftsman, and try it out yourself!

RSVP soon, as space is limited.

I am glad this is being taught but looks like no one is interested in accurately restoring decorative work… much like brick and stone work is a lost art.

Golden Hammer 2008 goes to Louis Salomonsky, Larry Shifflet and David White of Historic Housing LLC ?

Historic Housing LLC was responsible for the demolition of the 3 historic brick houses with iron porches on Cary in Oregon Hill which were replaced with Pine Court Apartments.

Is this the same organization who is currently the subject of the joint House Administration and House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on “Federal, State and Local Efforts to Prepare for the General 2008 Election”? The same organization who has been found to “have corruption at every level of ACORN including embezzlement, cover-ups, misuse of taxpayer funds and voter fraud” for decades? If so, we the citizens of Richmond VA should be promoting this organization, its events, and “awards” ad nauseum on these pages why?

Or, may I add, are they affiliated?

  5. posted by john m at September 27, 2008 7:32 am :

That is an entirely different group.

The Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (ACORN) has a very specific and obvious area of interest.

Thanks for the clarification. I shall change my name to “Duh”.

I couldn’t tell if you were trying to be funny or not, so I figured I’d play it straight. NPR had a piece on the other ACORN this morning.

I was ignorant, and after a bit of investigation of my own, along with your help, I felt pretty stupid that I posted the question at all. Being new not only to the Commonwealth, but to Richmond as well, I really did not know if there was a connection or not. Feel free to have a laugh at my expense. I did ;-).
