add your own details…

WikiMapia is “is a Web 2.0 project to describe the whole planet Earth”, as a map to which you can add your own information. [via]

Who made the descriptions on this map? Some of the southside neighborhoods are described only as ‘mainly black’ or ‘mainly poor black’ and one says its located in ‘poverty-stricken southside’. can we change the description of the fan to ‘overpaid white people and students’?

Jeesh, that’s tacky. I poked around the East End before I posted this and didn’t see egregious entries like that.

The descriptions are added by anyone that wants to add or edit a description. If you see something wrong, sign-up and correct it.

More errors hopefully corrected…I just went and updated the Union Hill info (boundaries were wrong) and created a page on Wikipedia for it. Hope it sticks, and transfers to the new mapping info.

Now we gotta look for more stuff to fix, like “Jefferson Avenue Park”.

I took a look and I agree with Regina, those descriptions are definitely in poor taste. Did you notice the two large paragraphs describing the Fan and it’s history?

Hmmm… I can add what my research on neighborhoods found. I still need a map. The old GIS maps on the city’s site worked much better for me than the new ones. The old ones had address labels. If the new one does, please show me.

I took a look and I’m un impressed. Does it have to have those imcorrect squares? It looks like Fairmount is most of the east end!

Hello from a Wikimapian in Durham, North Carolina! Just stopping by to appreciate the work done in Richmond. Very informative already. Next time I pass through Richmond, I’ll take some pictures to add.
