   There will be opportunities to take part in some retail therapy at the dog park grand opening. The RSPCA’s Lora Robbins Gift Shop will have a table, as well as items from Beggar’s Bones.

   The city just sent out a press release about this:

   City of Richmond Celebrates Opening of
   Church Hill Dog Park

   On Saturday, August 16, 2008, from 9 to11:30 a.m., the City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (DPRCF) and Friends of the Church Hill Dog Park (FCHDP) will host a grand opening ceremony to unveil the City’s newest dog park. Ceremonial dog biscuits will be passed out to two local Church Hill dogs, Radar and Penelope, to celebrate the “official” opening of the park. After the ceremony, vendors will be on hand and special presentations will be made by City of Richmond Animal Care and Control, Richmond SPCA, City of Richmond Department of Emergency Management, Pets at Play and more.

   The dog park is located at 32nd Street and East Broad Street in the lower section of Chimborazo Park in Churchill. The park is over 800 square feet and includes two fenced spaces, one for large dogs and a second for smaller dogs. Other features of the park are designated dog water stations, picnic tables and red fire hydrants for added visual effect. The park is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

   “The Church Hill Dog Park is just another example of our commitment to the Church Hill community,” said J.R. Pope, director of the DPRCF. “Because of the dedication of City staff and Friends of the Church Hill Dog park, we have an outstanding addition to our Park system. “

   “The relationship between the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and Friends of the Church Hill Dog Park has been a great one,” said Crystal Hock Pintac, chair of FCHDP. “The new dog park will enhance our community while allowing individuals and animals to socialize in a safe and welcoming environment. We are thrilled that it is open for everyone to enjoy.”

   In keeping with Dog Fancy Magazine’s award, citing Richmond as “One of America’s Dog Friendly Cities,” the City continues its work toward animal programs and projects. The Chimborazo Dog Park will be the second dog park in the City, joining Barker Field which is located in Byrd Park. As part of the Department’s Master Plan, which focuses on revitalizing and restructuring DPRCF facilities and programs, the department will continue to look for other locations for future dog park sites.

   Hah, it’s Baker and Radar who get the first bones and I love how my last name was misspelled.

   Not to mention the park is at the end of 36th and E Broad Streets more so than 32nd and E Broad.

   That’s just in case anyone was wonderin’.

   I will try to be there Saturday because I LOVE the little dog area. Yesterday I ran around like an insane person. I really like the red fire hydrants- nice attention to detail! And to all you little dogs in the ‘hood- come down and chill with me, I need some little homies to chase around!

    it looks like the dogs back leg is also mysteriously missing. was it hit by a car? also the front leg may also be missing. poor thing

    Just wanted to say thanks to the organizers of today’s events. It will be absolutely WONDERFUL to have this dog park right here in beautiful Church Hill for all of us to utilize and enjoy! My dog Missie LOVES coming to the park and has made lots of new doggie friends.
