14-year-old Deshun Taylor shot on Fairfield Avenue (UPDATED)

A shooting on the 2200 block of Fairfield Avenue just before 2:00PM has seriously injured a juvenile male. The young man, a 7th grade student at MLK Middle School, “has been taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries”. Police are offering an instant $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. [via]

John, please let us know when you have an update on this. Do we know who the victim is yet?

On the second to last day of school. What a way to start summer. We must stop the violence.

Do we know who the victim is yet?

His name hasn’t been publicly released (probably because of his age).

This is sad and my thoughts are with this child and his family.

I’m so angry with the gun lobby. Who is handing out guns like it’s bread to the people? It is warped and demented.

    John,

I know you have first had experience in the RPS. You see these kids every day. With the exception of myself, all my siblings have been teachers at one point or another. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The student was probably shot by someone he knows or lives nearby. Violent crime is rife in the projects and family life is a disaster. The kids that escape from this trap are the exception, not the rule.

Does any of this make this less tragic? No, it makes it worse.

Do we gain anything from avoiding the truth? This young man did not.

So unfortunate, thoughts and prayers to his family.

Was school let out early today?

Seventh grader killed in Richmond shooting (RTD 6/11/08)

A Mosby Middle School 7th grader died today after being shot in the 2200 block of Fairfield Avenue in Richmond.

Deshun Taylor, 14, was enjoying a day away from school when he was shot shortly before 2 p.m.

I was on my way home and came back by Fairfield Ave. I drive by that spot all the time if I’m going west on Fairfield and I turn at 21st. They had it blocked between 21st and 23rd and I saw the tv crews and roped-off area. This was about 4:30, so I had to wait until the 5 o’clock news to find out exactly what happened. A group of police on foot walked through the neighborhood and cars circled for hours. To think of of grief counsellors being at school on the last day is an awful way to begin the summer.

I thought I heard on the news tonight it was an argument. Why is it that every argument has to be settled by shooting someone? It’s always over something at the most extreme stupidity that can easily be shrugged off and laughable in the future. I’m sure someone knows whoever it was and they’ll be captured shortly.

I am more than ready to finally get rid of my neighbors in Fairfield Court. It’s time to break up the poverty concentration camps around the east end.

2 men arrested in Richmond teen’s killing (RTD 6/13/08)

Two men have been arrested, including one today in New York City, for the shooting death of 14-year-old Deshun Taylor in East Richmond on Wednesday.

Richmond police said Andrew Carl Avery, a 23-year-old Church Hill resident, was arrested during a traffic stop early today in New York. [...] A second suspect, Antonio Lamont Morris, 19, of Shirleydale Avenue, was arrested yesterday in Richmond, but police did not reveal his arrest until today. [...] Police are still looking a third suspect, 18-year-old Jesse Andrew Young, of the 2200 block of Fairfield Avenue, for conspiracy to commit murder.

Police said [Taylor] was not the intended target in the shooting, which resulted from an argument and exchange of gunshots by two groups of people.

During the ’06-’07 school year, I worked in a middle school where one of our 6th graders committed suicide. Whether or not you knew that child, you were touched by the loss and an emptiness that words describe. My thoughts and prayers go to you and your school.

It really makes no sense. When the country’s forefathers came up with the 2nd Amendment, I wonder if they knew we’d have murderers all over the county? Why is everything resolved with a gun? I bet the fools have no feelings of remorse. It’s a shame neighbor killed neighbor.

I heard the band playing yesterday evening when I came home. It was a much welcomed sound than the noise that passes as music these days being blasted.

Cheap guns and drugs find their way into the projects but not something like health care, jobs, and equal opportunity.

I think that the police should patrol our areas a little better. Get out their cars on a regular a be on foot. The really can’t see anything in their cars. Or alot more people will be hurt. Our streets are unsafe.
