Patrick Henry Pub by June 1

richmond.com is saying that Patrick Henry Pub and Grille should be open by June 1:

Owner Eric Werner, who used to own Sausalitos on E. Grace St., has turned the former German restaurant into one specializing in Northern Italian fare, with a few pub sandwiches and appetizers thrown in the mix. Most entrees will be under $15.

I can’t wait! But, I am afraid to get my hopes up - my fingers will be crossed.

Thanks for the heads up. Was hoping for more than simple Italian as that can be gotten many places in the city and easy to make at home. Needed a “different” continental cuisine. Oh well…

I’m excited about the Italian fare because that means us vegetarians will have a greater chance of being able to eat at the pub as well as drink, : ).

Acapello had Italian as well Crystal. Just that I liked the German fare better (being of German descent myself).

Just saw their menu and it’s not like the Italian menus all over town. They’ll have tasty Italian treats with fine ingredients at very reasonable prices. Put this way, they won’t be frying their calamari.

    Gray…

Did you happen to notice any seafood pasta main dishes? The Hill Cafe before the current owners took over and before there was a flurry of chef changes, use to have a hot seafood pasta dish that included calamari. Would like to see a similar one available from Eric Werner as we miss it.

The calamari dish I saw was a appetizer. I only had a brief glance at the pasta dishes b/c I had to get back to work. I remember, though, everything looking good and reasonable in price. The three categories I saw were mouth watering appetizers, hearty and different sandwiches, and pasta dishes/entrees. Oh, a lot of crustinis…not sure if I spelled that correctly.

duh, why is Italian more “vegetarian” than other European cuisines? What specifically did you have in mind as Italian vegetarian?

  11. posted by Gray at May 22, 2008 6:15 pm :

I just read on richmond.com that the pub and grill will be open until 11pm. Is that correct? That doesn’t give me much time for an outing after putting the kids to bed.

  12. posted by Eric S. Huffstutler at May 22, 2008 6:59 pm :

Sounds to me he is wanting to cater more towards food paying customers rather than have a bunch of people just sitting around the bar all night? Playing it safe at first to see what happens.

or that ABC limited their hours of operation so it doesn’t become the same “party” atmosphere as it became. Previous owners had no regard for the neighbors. The key word is “Neighborhood Restaurant”, not a party house. Bars don’t blend well, nor do they belong in a neighborhood.

  14. posted by Gray at May 22, 2008 8:20 pm :

We’re neighbors of the pub and there are only two things that disrupted my husband’s sleep: the scooter engines revving and my loud conversations and wild laughter with my best neighborhood buddy after exiting the pub. Now that I don’t smoke cigarettes, things won’t be as fun and I’ll be more quiet.

    dr. bud tugly,
i think crystal was excited, as am i, that the new owners didn’t choose ALL german or polish or et al., since those menus are quite meat-oriented. why so hostile to veggies, dr. tugly? feeling a little guilty about the endless slaughter? answer: probably not.

  16. posted by Bud Tugly at May 23, 2008 7:58 am :

not at all, while not a vegan we are NOT huge consumers of beef, veal, lamb, pork but do eat chicken and fish. At least three evening meals a week are exclusively vegetarian.

I simply wondered what is particularly “vegetarian” about Italian compared to Indian or many Asian dishes.

    Okay?

Bud - For veggies an Italian place means you know you can get a real pasta entree rather than just the cheese sandwich or salad most places have for vegetarian fare.

License restrictions or neighborhood consideration - either way, it is a step in the right direction.

Like Ramzi said, Italian means more than bruschetta for dinner or worrying if the marinara sauce will have sausage in it. German fare tends to consist of meat and lots of it. I do eat fish and will partake of turkey meat on occasion, but do not like to eat cows/pigs/chickens at all if it can be helped.

Now if they wanted to serve Indian and/or Mediterranean fare (samosas and baba ganoush anyone?) I’d be just as excited and probably even more so.

  21. posted by Bud Tugly at May 23, 2008 7:14 pm :

mea culpa. mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!!

As my wife pointed out marinara’s CAN be vegetarian and also eggplant parmigian is if you ex-the cheese but is that quibbling?

BTW, turkey is also the primary choice for burgers or “faux” red meat dishes here and Indian vegetarian is tops!

Tried Cafe Rustica today for 1st time and I failed not not succumb to the Scwheineschnitzel. Terrific and the accompanying pasta, olive, veggie side was awesome!

    via richmond.com:

Such is the case for Patrick Henry Pub and Grille (2300 E. Broad St., (804) 644-4242), which was supposed to open its Church Hill doors on the first of the month. But wouldn’t you know it the opening has been delayed.

Now the owners are trying to get the place up and operational by the end of next week, or June 23 at the latest.

Any word on the Taste of Heaven (or whatever it’s called) is supposed to open? It’s still sitting there with “Coming Soon” in the window….

Crystal… good question being they are supposed to be an Ice Cream shop and the hot weather is here.
