I heard all kinds of weapons and stuff that sounded like cannons. It was lighter by far this year, starting 2 minutes to midnight until probably 5 minutes after. For a couple of years in a row, bullets severed our phone line and two years, 2000 and 2001, were spent in the dark for the first minutes of those new years. Nonetheless, I'd recommend staying inside during the revelry. Several years back, our next door neighbor was outside during the turn of the clock and she was grazed by a bullet. It hit just behind her ear. Who knows how bad it could have been - she still has the scar. What goes up, must come down. Actually, I think this happens out in the burbs too.
