Richmond “Dead House Tour” Project

The December ‘07 contest is drawing to a close unclaimed at the Richmond “Dead House Tour” Project. Check out the photo and see if you can identify the former location of the house, “in a local Historic District, demolished by the City”…

November’s contest featured the brick shell of 1908-1916 East Broad Street.

The house in the photo … It had really wonderful trim up around the roof …. I want to say it was somewhere down on 20th or 21st just south of Broad, but I’m not sure. I DO remember the houses on Broad Street, 1908-1916 East Broad, buy I sadly did not identify them for the contest. Hmm, this is a really fun contest!

The property was on the lot that is now 320 N. 21st St., where the new construction is now. It was an old drug store at one time. I have an old medicine bottle from the store and a picture of it in 1892.

… and a picture of it in 1892

Any chance of me being able to scan that photo?

John, It’s on page 22 of Carlton McKenney’s book, Rails in Richmond. If you can’t get a copy, let me know and I’ll drop mine off to you. The picture shows the trolley car turning off 21st St. and heading up Marshall. There are houses on 21st St. One on the end may be this building but I’m not sure.

I did a little review of Rails in Richmond a while back. The Fairmount draft application to the National Register of Historic Places has some info about the trolleys, too.

From the Dead House Tour archive:

1950’s Neighborhood gathering place “Lip’s Grill”

On Sunday, August 3, 1997 the city posted a notice on the building that the owner had 24 hours to get a permit to fix the building. Soon after, on that same day the city’s contractor started demolition of the building. The owner caught wind of the demo and the contractor stopped. The next day Monday, August 4, 1997 the building code official put in writing that no permit would be authorized. Demolition was delayed by injunction, August 5, 1997.

The owner of the property later filed bankruptcy and the city had their way and demolished the building in 1998.

That description fits 320 North 21st Street, NW corner 21st and Marshall - now has a really nicely built in-fill house on it.

Interesting that that corner was once commercial - it is my understanding that the now vacant lot on the NE corner contained a building that was an electrical store at some point. Also, there is a long, low warehouse behind the garage (Duke’s? not sure what the name is on it now) that fronts along Broad at 21st.

Just kind of a nice history lesson (gee, this is a non-controversial thread, no name calling!) Great 50’s photo!
