urban forest threatened

With examples from Fulton and 21st Street, today’s RTD has a look at the city’s “complaint-driven tree-maintenance policy [which] threatens the urban forest“. City crews are cutting down 1,500 to 2,000 trees a year (often in response to neighbor complaints), while planting only 300 new trees.

Crupi report cites “Europeanization” of urban living

Consultant James A. Crupi today presented “Putting The Future Together”, a report on the current state of Richmond and a look forward, at a public meeting at VCU’s Siegel Center. The RTD has an overview, and you can check out the report in its entirety (2.2MB PDF).

The Built in America collection, part of the American Memory from the Library of Congress, has more than 350,000 photos, drawings, and records documenting “achievements in architecture, engineering, and design in the United States”.

Flip It Back airs this Sat/Sun

The episode of Flip It Back, the house renovation reality show filmed this year chronicling the rebirth of 816 and 818 North 23rd Street, will premier this weekend. The hour-long episode will air Saturday 11/17 @ 9:00 PM, Sunday 11/18 @ 12:00 midnight, and Saturday 11/24 @ 6:00 PM.

Style Weekly finds out more about Must Be Heaven, the new “old-fashioned ice cream parlor” rumored to be coming to Broad Street. On the menu will be “old-style Southern delicacies like rice pudding and corn pudding, as well as Chicago hot dogs, soups and other desserts” and Gelati Celesti.

nbc12′s “Neighborhood Watch” ran a short piece about how elderly residents of the Fairmount House (@1501 N 21st Street) are concerned that security is being cut back at the facility, especially in light of recent crime in the immediate area.

Awaiting renovation

At McQuinn’s meeting last Saturday, City Assessor James Hester made the off-hand comment that every year the edge of where people are buying and renovating moves north about 1/2 a block. I went looking for that line and took some photos through Church Hill North towards Oakwood and up into Fairmount.
