To throw out a request … do any of you photo junkies happen to have any historic pictures of the 3rd Presbyterian Church at the corner of 26th and Broad? Or perhaps some detailed info? They’re condos now and the history of the place seems to be fading fast. We know it served as a school and a government building sometime in-between. Would love to see some older shapshots.

Check out Jack Zehmer and Marguerite Crumley’s book, Church Hill, The St. John’s Church Historic District, page 26. There is a good history there. I remember when it was a Black Muslim temple in the 70’s. How times have changed! Old photos should be at the Valentine Richmond History Center.
This photo was probably taken at or about the same time they did an inventory about 1965 and individual historic house info can be found online at the VA State Library.
My problem is trying to find photos of the 27th Street area before 1900 - either block or houses to get a glimps of ours and how it looked possibly before severe alterations were done to it? 407 N 27th Street.

Looking closer at this picture, there are several cars with points in their grill and that wasn’t popular until late 60s and early 70s. I figure it was taken about 1968-69 but one can also note that Pritchard Brothers between 27th and 28th and Marshall still had a gas station complete with a station store now demolished and even a flag pole. If we can determine when that went out of business then can help zero in. Give you some perspective as to the demographic changes of the city and how traffic and stores still flourished on Marshall and other side streets when this picture was taken. It’s a great picture and wish we could find more like it as big in detail!
