How was Halloween?
We’ve heard of a few cases of vandalism and broken windows towards Chimborazo. Fairmount had so many kids going door-to-door (in costume, even) that we ran out of candy.

Our doorbell rang only about 5 times. But we live in one of the few house on S St. that actually faces S St. (it’s right off of Oakwood). Our part of the block doesn’t exactly scream, “Get your candy here!”.
I heard there were a lot of children trick or treatin in the neighborhood up and down Broad Street and 26th. It is great to see. It just goes to show the transition the neighborhood is going through. Happy Holloween Everyone!!!
Obviously, CH is not the epitome of safety. I live in Nolde Bakery (which is an unpenetrable force for Halloweeners, incidentally) and it’s a pretty safe spot.
But lately I’ve noticed that main entrance–which usually requires either a code or a call to a resident–is wide open.
Anybody else in the Nolde building find this a little unnerving?
We live on the 300 block of N. 27th St. We have neighbors who put on quite a show! There is a hoard of people all having a great time. I bought tons of candy and still ran out.
The Haunted Steet last night in the 300 Block of 27th was lots of folks having fun together and a thrill for the kids, participants and parents alike. It is a good example of what we can do when a community pulls together while focusing on commond ground and not on our differences.
I live on N. 33rd. Wasn’t home for the evening and came home to a couple large stones on my front porch and a broken window.
I live near Karen, and I think we had the same flow of kids. I bought about 10-12 bags of assorted goodies and we ran out around 7 so we went trick or treating so we would have some candy.
We live on the 400 block of n 28th. We had tons of trick-or-treaters and a fun toiletpaper’d tree across the street!
rm – N. 32nd here. Thankfully no broken windows. Saw large groups (ten or more) of people around 6 to 6:30 p.m., not many were under 5 feet tall, many were more than that, so assume they were at least teens, and absolutely none in costume.
Only lived here six months but have not seen many kids in this area, which makes me wonder where those groups came from. Did see a police car cruise by around 6 p.m. but it apparently didn’t cruise your street when your window was broken, sorry ’bout that.
Gotta wonder if police had some idea that something was going on around here, since they were slowly cruising around just before dark.
anon, the police cruise CH on a regular basis 24/7. There are actually 3-4 officers assigned to CH only (you’ll can sometimes see them parked in front of houses that have a wireless connection) and we have at least 1 of them living on Broad Street.
Halloween is a night some kids think it cool to cause damage to property and other civilians so the cops were just making themselves seen I’m sure. Wait until New Years for the real “fireworks.”
Also, it helps that the 1st Precinct is on 25th and Q. ;)
We’re a few blocks down from Karen and had much the same level of traffic. I opened our door at one point to a near flood of some twenty kids (surprisingly almost all were under five feet tall).
We had a number of older kids and even adults as well, though the Fan seems to get far more teens and college kids than CH. Like a lot of other people, we did wind up running out of candy.
There were hordes ..hordes I tell you… of kids old enough to drive that were trick or treating. Some were slightly demanding, but all in all, they were well behaved.
And there were some late night mum thefts… but other than that, no vandalism over in my neck of the woods
In the 3600 block of Broad street we had 22 delightful trick or treaters. One was not in costume and when my wife asked what he was dressed as, the young man pulled the costume out of his back pack and proudly put it on. No vandalism, only happiness.
I will mention in the last two months on our little block, we have had three vehicle windows broken to steal items in them. all three happened between 1230am and 5am, during the work week. Two of the times the culprit was man with a medium to slightly heavy build, African American, wearing a dull green colour jacket, and sporting a moustache. He barely got away from me last time. I’m vigilant but slow.
russell edwards has a new interesting concept of advertising the not-so-secure nature of a residence. if it is uncomfortable maybe check with building mgt. or maybe it will get checked out by a reader looking for an opportunity
My kids, and us, had a great time! The block on 27th was amazing, I can’t wait to talk all the 26th and M cronies into that same sort of thing next year.
Not having the event at the East District Center this year helped keep down a lot of the no-costumes and trouble that we usually have.

Umm…yea, I think if I lived in a supposedly secure building and the lock stopped working on the door, I’d be inclined to contact management instead of posting on a blog that the building was no longer secure (responding to Bill’s comment about Comment Number 3 by Russell).
Sounds like gang activity to me!
