The East End
Style Weekly gives the cover to the East End, calling it “the city’s oldest and  after decades of sleep mode  its hippest up-and-coming neighborhood. But mostly it is a place of startling contrasts.” The article is accompanied by a photo essay by Scott Elmquist.

I liked that Scott mentioned the Richmond Parks and Rec football league. My son plays for the Chimborazo football team. We have really enjoyed Church Hill football! And it’s activity that has so many positives for the community. Lots of the kids that participate walk many blocks to make it to the field for practice every night. The coaches really do care about developing the child as well as his athletic skills. And each game not only brings together the children and their parents, but much of the neighborhood comes to spend all day Saturday at a very positive event. Even on away games!
And they do all of this with very little money. Every year, there are kids that need help getting the equipment or that need transportation to participate. The folks who run the program tackle each of theses issues and really do a fine job. I realize now what a great return you get from an investment in Parks and Recreation.
We play at the Oakwood field by the cemetery. I hope one day the field will be equipped with lights and have bathroom facilities. Right now, the funding for all this just does not exist. Yet, this program serves over hundred children, including cheer leading (which by the way is also an excellent program) and positively impacts at least a hundred more members of our community.
